Not really. By keeping pressure on it's competitors MWeb is at least helping to create and sustain a competitive market.
Remember the silly (and expensive) 3GB and 5GB capped accounts which were the norm before MWeb launched it's "unsustainable" uncapped offerings?
CellC is the same, by undercutting the competition it forces it's competitors to lower their margins.

Yes, the solutions provided may not be as good as the competition but it definitely fosters a competitive environment which I'm grateful for.
 
Two steps forward, three steps back - Telkom can't sustain the 2mb connection speeds so it brings 1 back? That's a joke and a laugh... 8Mb is a bitter pill to swallow too, guess their "Best Effort" offerings just really aren't good enough... Fibre can't come quick enough to ditch ADSL / Line Rentals completely and just go for proper connecitivy
 
I dont think its going backwards, all they have added is new cheaper speed points. It makes sense to pay less if you only get 8mb in your house vs your friend down the road who gets 10mb. Just like it makes sense that if people cant afford a 2mb line that they can opt for 1mb.

I think its the start of a pilot of potentially naked ADSL. If Telkom cant gain customers on lower products how will they make it viable to drop the line rental for ADSL? I am the lucky/unlucky one as we have poor cellphone reception at home so I am forced to use a telkom land line.
 
what is with this 40GB a month nonsense? if you down load you would hit that mark in the middle of the month so i'll pass

There is definitely room in the market for super cheap entry level products like this. The issue is phone line rental makes these deals not quite that cheap once you add all the bits and pieces you need to use the data. It's rather absurd the most expensive component is actually line rental.

But well done Telkom for taking a step towards a fixed line product for the poor, you just need to finish the job.

1Mbps?!? Been there done that,and as a country we should have moved on to higher speeds and more data packages.What's next,the likes of the Mobile networks moving back to 384kbps("3G") with 2GB data starter-packs so the "masses" can uptake mobile broadband on their brand new shiny smartphones(you try that experience) and we will call that progress?Me thinks not.

Okay, flogging a dead horse here, but:
Mr Staff Writer, it is not a 1Mbps uncapped product. Did you perhaps miss this part:

A fair use policy does apply, with the monthly usage threshold set to 40GB. The package is also subject to a 12-month contract.

No wait, you could not have missed it, because you wrote it! So it's 40GB account at 1Mbps, and thereafter uncapped at whatever speed they throttle you to (which I see you failed to mention in the article).

Now I don't much care that MWeb themselves call it a 1Mpbs uncapped product. If I create a product and call it #paybackthemoney, that is not magically going to make Zuma pay back the money. Nor does calling this product 1Mbps uncapped magically make it so.

So let's use our brains and #callitwhatitis.

I was quite happy to see the 8Mbps as I reckoned it paved the way for Telkom to still provide 3 line speed profiles as is currently the norm(excl.VDSL 20/40Mbps) and see the introduction of 4/8/10Mbps ADSL speed profiles with 4Mbps the entry point on ADSL...guess I was mistaken.

I was hoping that with 1Mbps being 40GB, then 8*1Mbps would be 320GB :-(

Any idea with the Data+8Mbps line costs will be?

Are these thresholds (all products) published on your website? If so,please can you provide a link.
 
I don't know if this encourages the advancement of broadband around here :confused:
