Hi all,

I am looking for the cheapest/best solution for uncapped ADSL.

I saw on webafrica and openweb they offer this, but got this 5-day rolling / monthly threshhold.. does this mean, once that threshhold has been reached, I got hard-capped? or how does it work?

And secondly, "1 concurrent connection", does this mean - only 1 PC can connect to the internet? or can I do some ICS and connect my wii / xbox 360 & the other desktops I got around my house?

Sorry, am a bit of a n00b when it comes to this :-/

Move to London, Call up BT. In 3 days you'll have an uncapped 16mb line for 32 quid p/m.
*Don't mention Uncapped to them..they'll think you're in idiot. The concept of capped internet is lost to them*:D

I am sure some cleverer people will answer you, but IIRC that rolling threshold plan drops your speed to half if you go over the stated limit.

You can plug as many devices as you want into a switch ( or the router ) - they mean you cannot establish another connection from another line ( your mate's house for example ). Otherwise they would just sell one uncapped account and we'd all be "sharing" it.

From WebAfrica page:

The ADSL Express service is a managed service, whereby your usage is monitored and recorded. The service is allocated a certain threshold for the month which is divided into a 10 day rolling window. If you reach your 10 day threshold before the 10th day, your available bandwidth will be halved (e.g. 512 kbps will be reduced to 256 kbps). However, if your consumption is reduced, your bandwidth will be restored to the purchased level.

lol... funny ;-) (BUT TRUE)..

I remember that actually... Stayed in London for just under a year before moving back to SA, joburg.. and was sitting in a coffee shop, and started a conversation with some odd person about SA and stuff.. got to the topic of Internet and pricing.. and the dude was shooooocked about SA's offerings.. he laughed quite hard.. quite embarrassing ;-)

Can't help you with product choice, but "1 concurrent connection" means just that. However, the single connection can be routed your end to multiple pc's or devices as you choose. It just means you can't connect to the same account at the same time from more than 1 location or on more than 1 line.

edit: rwenzori quicker than me...

Jip... Streaming Anime while downloading it was the best.. (5min to download a 200mb file...not bad).

But, correct me if I'm wrong... Doesn't Neotel offer the best Uncapped service? R800 p/m or something like that?

Think I'd rather stay away from Neotel for now. A friend ordered his line and was supposed to recieve his handset within 48hrs, 8 days later, still waiting :(

Get a fixed line for best reliability, and overall happy experiences.

Well, from what I've read - Neotel uncapped isn't really "uncapped"... correct me if I'm wrong saying that. But the end-users on the uncapped consumer product neotel offers, have been receiving calls from neotel saying to take it easy peasy on the downloading...

I would go for Neotel, but I'm specifically looking to use this for downloading..
The speed of the line really doesn't matter.. cause i can leave a download on for 3 days to finish something, as long as I get it at the end of the day - and I dont have to worry about the download limit.

Reasons for getting upcapped:
- Online Wii / Xbox 360 / PC gaming
- Downloading the occassional big file
- Streaming some TV / Radio channels from overseas
- Basic surfing

Well, if the 1 concurrent connection is only meant for one person using it.
thats fine - wasn't really planning to share it at all. I suppose form a financial perspective, it would be good to share, but i'm not really phased.

Dunno, just my limit lies on about 800/900 monthly for internet.
Just hate the idea of a limit..

yeah - u right..

But if ADSL, what is the best option to go for? I checked hellkoms website..

Theres loads of ADSL options on there, also under the uncapped section..
Although I see these VIP-access account VPN256.. will that do the trick?
Any suggestions what i can pick out of there.

Thanks for the advice FrancTheTank :-) much appreciated

(search function in forums is your friend)

Check-out some VPN threads, basically ok if your in windoze, sharing(between xbox or other devices on your network), like you prob want to do, becomes a bit of a 3-headed dragon, so unless you're a knight within your network settings and can route and share like a king, stay away.

Some advice; pehaps get a big account, like 10 or 20 gigs for the first couple of months(there are fairly good month to month ones), then get uncapped when your usuage starts getting wild??

VPN uses your adsl connection, and establishes a network to another PC - on the ISP side of things and you're effectively browsing through another PC. The VPN connection is established from your PC to another PC(ISP) through your adsl line.

You still need an ADSL line and the connection/account is provided by the ISP from whom you get the VPN.

It is different in the sense that the connection is established from your PC and not from your router, i.e. the more complex to share your account with other devices on your network. Unsure of the latency etc I haven't used it before, but this is what I understand it to be like.

Restricted Internet...!?

Hi guys...

As I'm comming to SA in a while and I have been reading about the way your ISP's are giving "service" down there...

Seriously - Is it for real that youre on a limit regarding "outside" traffic... Like the fact that you have to pay if you go over some limit on 1 GB or something like that for visiting pages and downloading from sites outide SA..?
You can hardly call that "Internet" can you...:o

I have never heard that in my life in anywhere of the world... And it seems quite "dated" from where I come... (Denmark that is)
I have been on the Internet for about 15 years now and got my first ADSL line in 1998 and it has been uncapped from the word go...

So it is quite a schock to hear that a modern country as South Africa is not providing the same service... how is that...?

You're in for a helluva "schock" I think!

Where to start???

We have an incompetent govt Dept of Communications who have done very little since the ANC came into power to open up the telecoms market. We have a state controlled telco that has ( almost ) a monopoly on the current limited undersea cable bandwidth ( and charge "landing fees" to any other company who have bandwidth on the cables ). They artificially hold the prices very high. One ISP has some satellite bandwidth, but that is also expensive. We have mobile operators who connive to keep data prices artificially high. We have an "independent" regulator who isn't, and is also incompetent.

There IS hope, because more cables are coming in, and there is gradual liberalization of the market.

You CAN buy uncapped accounts of various types and speeds, starting at about R1000pm. But the speeds will be a bit slow compared to what you are used to, unless you are pretty wealthy! The "normal" incremental prices for capped accounts are about R75 per international ( ie: outside SA ) gigabyte, and about R20 for national. Not that there is much "national" that is any fun, seeing as the local music copyright association has recently shut down the local torrent trackers, without any real legal basis, but anyway!

:eek::eek:

I posted this before as a word of caution.

Dont get the express accounts. Waste of time and money.

The only uncapped option that's worth it is the business uncapped account. Problem with it is the price and that you have to use a router supplied by IS. You also dont have access to the router.

The good points are that it's uncapped, unshapped with no threshold cap. So if you want to download a billion terabytes, go ahead.

Bottom line is be prepared to fork out a minimum of R1539(ISP) + R326(Telkom) every month for proper uncapped internet. (But we all know it's still rubbish compared to the rest of the world)

Other wise Neotel prime uncapped is the only other option if price is the biggest issue. (Provided you have good coverage)

By the way;

1 Concurrent connection means you can only use the account on one ADSL router at one given time. (Imagine, people will purchase a uncapped account together and use it at their own homes downloading like crazy)

Pretty obvious why you always see 1 concurrent connection allowed with uncapped accounts

4 Concurrent connections mean that you can use one account at 4 different locations at any given time.

Its got nothing to do with network sharing
