Hey, y'all
I'm just a foreigner that's heading to SA soon. I know it's gonna be cold real soon, which means it's streaming time, so I was wondering what the best option for me would be in terms of Mobile ISP and package. I plan to use quite a bit of data, so I'm looking for something within the 100gb - Uncapped range. Pricing isn't an issue.

Telkom LTE Uncapped.

R799 a month.

Thanks for the reply. But just how widespread is Telkom's LTE? I will be bouncing around the country (i.e. Joburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Stellenbosch), and I will be spending a lot of my time in Northgate. Also, I've seen people posting about problems they've had with the service. Is it still a viable option with all those factors in play?

Are you going to be staying here for long or just for a holiday, I doubt they will sign you up if you dont have a SA ID, I could be wrong.

I'll be staying for over a month. Wouldn't I be able to use my passport as an alternative? I guess I'll just see when I get there. Thanks for the help, guys.

You can get 50GB (all network) on a pre-paid SIM for R1799.

If you go out of Telkom Mobile coverage it'll roam on to MTN but only HSPA but up to 42Mbps.

Passport and proof of address (i.e. Itinerary of location you'll reside) are required to obtain a SIM.

To sign postpaid contract with Telkom you need SA bank account and proven credit record. If you don't buy on credit, they know nothing about you.

The best prepaid offer is Cell C Giga100 R999 valid for one year. Cell C network only (no Vodacom roaming), but coverage is good (better than Telkom). For areas outside coverage, buy Cell C roaming bundle (preferably on additional SIM), or Telkom prepaid SIM mentioned above.

Good luck with that.
Your best bet would be to choose to buy around 100-200Gb of prepaid data on a network with wide coverage. (vodacom/MTN)
In order to get a prepaid sim you will have to go through a process called RICA, requiring proof of residence, among other things.
After you've RICA-d you can expect your sim card to become active within 1 to ∞ days.

Vodacom offer a 20GB data bundle for R999 ($67 USD)
MTN can offer you a 100GB data bundle for R3999 ($272 USD)

After RICA'ing the SIM will be active within 30 seconds except Telkom Mobile which seems to take a minute!!

Except it is Telkom Unlimited contract, as it can take few days (according to user reports).

Have a look here http://www.b4igo.travel/index.php
Most of our International Airports have such Vodacom Shops.
I have travelled with Telkom Data sim in South Africa.
Vodacom is not cheap but best coverage across SA and along roads, and best support.
Only good for large cities but along the road and small places you'll have a hard time.
The worst time would be to try and buy a Telkom LTE sim.
I waited 4 hours in a queue just to be told I need an ID and not my drivers license while phone support said I could use my drivers.
If you really want a Telkom Sim then let me know.
I have an email address of a very friendly Telkom guy who assisted me via email with the "paper work"

Telkom may be cheap but useless customer service.
