All our telephone lines work on underground cables. We have 2 dsl lines and telkom decided to connect them both onto the pole. In the past year, the one line got hit with lightning about 3 or 4 times, each time needing to replace the router.

Is it possible to call telkom and ask them to move the line to underground cables? Do you know what number to call?

Would you like the underground cables to go through your pool or your water mainline? They'll also want to knock down a part of your wall and/or Wendy house.

That thread title belongs in the thread "Things that sound dirty, but aren't"...

After losing my first router in less than a year I now unplug it as soon as it appears that it is going to rain. You could also try to fit a good quality surge protector. If you are using Billion routers you might be able to get them repaired for much less (~R300) than the replacement cost although this can take several weeks.

Is the telephone wiring underground right up until your property or only to a point some distance away? Lightning pulses can travel a considerable distance down the line so your entire telephone line from the exchange would need to be buried underground to reduce the problem. You could bury a conduit on your own property right up to the telephone pole and then get Telkom to connect their line to yours, however, this won't help if any other section of the line is above ground. You would need to seal the conduit very well to prevent water from seeping in particularly after heavy rains as this will cause problems with your ADSL service. You would probably need to use a direct burial waterproof Cat 5 type network cable (take a look on Google) inside the conduit just to be safe otherwise you may need to redo the job after a few years.

i don't think telkom will help you out, or else they will do it but you need to foot the bill!!

Techie was just here to fix another fault and asked him if he can change it to underground. He said its a simple process cause we have a dp inside our building.

Now our line is running underground all the way into our company :). That was prety painless :)
