Undersea cable landing guidelines published

with the written Authorization issued by the minister

Wasn't there an article about how the minister shouldn't have that kind of power? If I remember correctly it was along the lines of that she can make the rules to landing here ins South Africa. She can enforce that the rules be obeyed, but having the power too CHOOSE who can land here is too much power for 1 person?

Power corrupts... Absolute power corrupts absolutely!

The Minister exempted the SAT-3/WASC/SAFE cable system from the newly published guidelines as ‘application of the ownership criteria would result in a disruption of international commerce’ and undermines the purposes of the ECA.

Telkom SA will also not need to obtain an authorization in terms of the current operations of its international submarine cable system.
I thought their monopoly ended a few years ago when SNOT (Neotel) was introduced? Why do they not get the same treatment?

they (the idiots in charge) want a controlling share.they controll the landing they have the money

how do you call them "idiots" when they are obviously in charge? Government is boss dude, follow suite or be a traitor. You should be arrested for treason for that comment.

In the document Communications Minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri, in consultation with Environmental and Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk, declares that the landing of international submarine cables ‘constitute activities that will affect more than one province and once connected to the international global communications network will transverse international boundaries’.

Serious brainstorming session there. Must've taken them a whole hour to confirm that with google maps.

Translation: To ensure that the current conflicts of interest aren't adversely affected by the new conflicts of interest in the new "policy".

I think you might be thinking of this article http://mybroadband.co.za/news/Telecoms/2999.html

Anyone got a linky to the actual guidlines / gazette ?

"implications for national environmental policy" --WTF ??

Lets hope SEACOM have all their bases covered and our Minister wont interfere with this

I'd still like Ivy to explain exactly how a cable landing here constitutes a 'national security implication'... It's bollocks. Just like the rest of this guideline.

/spit

easy to explain, if "they" control it, it would be easy to spy on the citizens and you would have a secure income

And call me racist or whatever because I'm not..its just plain common sense that they are only capable of looking out for themselves, they dont give a sh*t about me and you,or atleast 70% of them dont
