Hi (To one and all)

I was hoping/wondering if someone here could impart me with an answer/explanation to my why my ADSL (4096) connection is behaving the way it is? (I've spent an hour or so browsing the web trying to find an answer, but to no avail.)

Situation - I've had my 4096 line/connection for about 24 hours now (I know... total NOOB. :) ) - I also understand that it is an "up to" 4096... which from what I understand basically means that you can connect at a speed of up to 4096 KB/s, but this is not the guaranteed speed. - Which is all well and good.

I was also informed that I was just in reach of the exchange to get a 4096 Line, which would affect my data integrity.

Though I am PC literate (3D animator by trade) I don't thoroughly understand some factors of how the ADSL connection should work and am just looking for a little help. :)

My questions/quandaries are as follows:-
(BTW: Any assistance/clarification is truly appreciated. :) )

1. What is the minimum KB/s speed I should be getting on a download/connection?

2. Is there some way to stabilize the line speed/connection? (Allow me to explain why I ask this - When downloading files/browsing the web I see a great fluctuation in the actual speed of my connection, sometimes - while download a file - it will drop as low as 35 KB/s - not much better than a 384 kbs (as I understand) - and then spike up to 250 KB/s.)

I mean I honestly do not mind loosing a bit of speed on my line/connection, it if will provide a stable connection/download rate.

I would like to thank you for your assistance in advance and look forward to hearing from (anyone).

Regards

Grim

Your ADSL line is capable/upto of 400KB depending on the distance of the last mile/distance from exchange. the shorter the distance the lower the latency and the more stable the connection. This is an overhang from aged copper infrastruture and will over time be rectified when replaced with fibre.

Also remember that when downloading you are receiving at what the host can transmit so if the host can only send at 15KB then your 400KB line will only receive at the slowest rate.

Thanks a ton

Hi Jirm

Thanks a ton for the response... it cleared up things for me.

Hi Reaper Grim,

Some things to remember:

1. You will inevitably have varying download speeds from site to site and source to source because their internet access speeds will vary.
2. Sometimes popular files will download quicker than others because they have been cached localy (in South Africa by either your ISP or another caching service installed to save your ISP or their ISP money on bandidth) already which gives it the appearance of insane speeds.
3. The best you can do to check your line speed is to visit a site like www.speedtest.net and do a speed test to see what the capabilities of your line is to different set locations around the globe.

:)
