Awhile ago I was browsing around with a spare Vodacom SIM with no airtime or data, seeing what I could, and could not do. Seeing as how I could partially access some Vodacom-related pages, I decided to send them an e-mail asking what else they offer for free :)

Relevant Part of my E-Mail (Sent from their "Contact" page on help.vodacom.co.za)

Hello, I was wondering if you could help me. I have access to the help.vodacom.co.za site when I have run out of airtime, yet no access to www.vodacom.co.za Is this normal? If so, is there a list of "no airtime" sites that I am able to visit? Ones I have discovered so far: www.vodacom4me.co.za (Very limited - Cannot register with R0.00 airtime) help.vodacom.co.za (Full access, including software downloads for devices) Are there any others?

Simple enough - I inform them of what I can do, inform them of my query, and request information on alternate free sites. Their response?

Thank you for your email communication to Vodacom.

Kindly be advised that we do not have any “no airtime” websites, to access the internet you will need a minimum of R1.00 airtime and you will be billed R2 per MB unless you have a data bundle.

We are unable to comment on why you are able to browse some websites and not others due to insufficient funds.

So.... According to Vodacom, sites such as help.vodacom.co.za, and www.vodacom4me.co.za (Some of it anyways) are NOT meant to be free!!!

News to me :D :D :D

So... Seeing as how we are... Urmmm... Sneaking free data behind Vodacom's back... Anyone know of any other free sites (That aren't meant to be free) ? :)

What is really unexpected is that you actually did get a response, other than the auto-reply.

I am not sure if there are any other free sites , however i do know that the GPRS support guys do monitor all the APN's and proxies for abnormal usage. They have found some loop holes and closed it.

Hmmm - You should look into that - A list of free sites is always a good thing :)

I was primarily surprised that they openly admitted that downloading software off of the help.vodacom.co.za site (Eg: The Vodaphone Mobile Broadband Software) was NOT meant to be free, and neither was browsing around for helpful information on setting up assorted devices ;)

Maybe I'm somehow misreading the response?

On a related note, I remember another thread about people complaining that it WAS charging, and that it had been fixed... So... Is it meant to be free, or not?

Naughty boy. There are many zero rated sites on Vodacom, why? Beats me too. But we love them. :-)
