Union wants 16% Telkom wage increase

Wow, people are fools. Guess who is going to bare the brunt of Telkom's 16% increase in costs if that happens. When you force a company to unwillingly increase it's wages, they will inevitably shift the costs onto the customer. We're all going to bare the brunt of this.

I suppose that this means that they will strike, pushing the date of my line installation out to another 2 months or so later.
I say: Identify the slackers and fire them, and give the remaining people their 16% increase, and declare a drop in profits because of "operational costs".

There certainly is enough in their pot for the wage increases now that they're not needlessly enriching top-brass at Telkom-media and, their past fin year had to account for the 2.3 (or 3.2) billion rand handover re the tender-renege lost court battle thing. Those two combined mean a heck of a lot of cash in hand.
If they still need extra cash: they could pay less bonuses to non-performing top-brass and then there's the actual billions in profit itself.
Even if Telkom do nothing to grow to accomodate wage increases, they can simply sit on their butt doing nothing as they have been doing for all these years, they will still extort enough profit for it. Their only worry going forward is: "How much smaller is our pie going to be?"

I wish I could get a 16% increase in salary!!
Unions should always ask for way more than they expect to get. It gives plenty of room for negotiation.
Bare in mind that a 16% increase in wages for unionised employees works out to <1% increase in operating cost, so it should have no impact on prices. When a company is still making obscene profits, it's very hard for them to deny decent wage increases with a straight face, in light of the bungled spending on Telkom Media and other failed initiatives.

I would LOVE 16%, heck 10% would be awesome already.

Some workers (Presently Advantaged) have Solidarity, some past workers, now pensioners (Presently Disadvantaged) have Tito M from the SARB granting regular income DECREASES!!
