A group of security guards working at the University of SA (Unisa) has been fired after taking part in a protest against outsourcing, an EFF student leader said on Wednesday.
The guards, employed by the Red Alert security company, were sacked for participating in Monday's strike, Mpho Morolane told News24.
"We are not going to leave this issue. We are not going to let our parents be expelled for raising a genuine concern," he said.
On Monday, cleaners, security guards and student leaders shut down Unisa's Sunnyside campus in Pretoria in a bid to force management to permanently employ contract workers.
Morolane said they would take the fight to the company and management to ensure they reappointed the workers.
Unisa spokesperson Martin Ramotshela said he could not comment as Red Alert employed the guards. Attempts to get comment from Red Alert were unsuccessful.
