Never thought I would say this but I am actually really enjoying being on Unity. This is after giving KDE and both Gnome 2 and Gnome 3 its best shot. Basically I was having stability issues with apps and the OS on gnome and KDE. Things would crash randomly and it was getting frustrating. I decided to suck it up and give Unity another go. Once you customize it its actually pretty stable and fluid.

For some reason I cant live without a Task Bar. I need one in my life so I installed Tint2 and this meets all my task bar needs. I treat the current launcher like a "Start Menu" and have it auto hide when not in use.

I also installed tilda for my terminal needs and have customized that nicely.

So now I have a decent, stable desktop with full functionality. Right now of all the desktops, Unity is my favorite.

I know you get lighter ones like XFCE and co, but I like a little eye candy and bling in my desktop life.

Any suggestions, tips or tricks on how to improve the Unity experience?

I'm over eye candy, i just want something with low resources, snappy and out of my way.
It can be snappy too :) It is when you disable the fluff that is not needed, and it allows for far more advanced settings than the normal xfce window manager.

But the great thing about *nix, there is something for everyone. No need to go with the WM of the month.

Unity has matured into a very stable DE. My main advice from experience is to avoid the temptation of installing additional DEs for comparison. After a few updates my desktop became unstable. Uninstalling the other DEs helped, but did not totally cure the problem.

My favorite was XFCE, but I need an environment where I can change proxy severs quickly and easily on a regular basis. This meant Unity or Gnome 3. Of the two, Unity ended up being the best fit.

I have enough hardware that xfce is a waste. I dont need a lightweight desktop. Its too simple for me and doesnt suite my needs on this machine. Unity is getting polished and so right now my whole setup looks and feels good. Im happy with it. I even like how the top bar works. It gives me more desktop.

I'm also using Unity as my default DE these days. I hated it initially, but they fixed most of the issues I had, and it's a pretty solid environment now. I even like the global menu *ducks*

Unity has always been a pretty DE, but only recently (say 12.04) has it actually developed some really useful functionality. The HUD feature(using alt to find menu items) for example is an absolute pleasure for writing in Latex.

As for speed, standard unity was too fast  and not pretty enough for me, so I installed an animated background.

The comments here show how Unity has matured. Two years ago everyone would have been bashing it, now most people like it.
