Student registration at Wits University has been suspended for the day following protests at the institution.

Wits Student Representative Council President Nompendulo Mkatshwa spearheaded student protests at the university's Hall 29, where onsite registration was meant to take place.

She told parents and students that the SRC would not permit any students to register until their demands were met by university management.

"Our intent is not to render theses institutions ungovernable... our intent is to ensure that every academically qualified student registers in the year 2016. An injury to one is an injury to all."

Mkatshwa said there was a concern among students around an extension of the 0% fee increase.

"Right now we have no certainty that we will have a 0% increment in the year 2017... we don't know when this tag team is going to start implementing structures towards free education," she said.

Mkatshwa said they were giving university management 24 hours to respond to their demands.

An assisting dean then addressed parents and said registrations was suspended for the day, and urged students to register online.

This protest follows last year's countrywide student demonstrations against fee increments for 2016.

President Jacob Zuma then said there would be no increase in fees for the year.

Meanwhile, there was also a police presence at the University of Johannesburg where some students claimed that their student cards had been blocked.

And therein lies yet another example of how moronic these people are. There is no way that everyone qualified to get into Wits can be accepted on the simple basis there would not be enough space.

Honestly I think this is completely inconsiderate. They're hurting poor parents more than anything with this.

Wits urges students to register online after SRC disruptions

Johannesburg - Wits University management has urged all Health Science students to register online after on-site registration was disrupted by the SRC on Monday.

In a statement, Wits management said they would suspend "face-to-face" registration for Monday and Tuesday in Hall 29.

The closure would affect ‎students registering for Health Sciences, Engineering and Built Environment‎.

The university said registration would continue online until Friday January 15.

"All other students will also still be able to register online, as per the normal schedule," the statement read.

Students who are unable to register online were urged to call 011 717 1888, which would be active from 15:00 on Monday afternoon.

"Please note that there are large volumes of calls coming through, so if you have problems with your telephonic registration, please email [email protected]," the university said. ‎

The Wits SRC had demanded that no students be financially excluded in 2016.

UJ says no to on-site registrations

Johannesburg - Management at the University of Johannesburg on Monday said they would not budge on their online registration policy, even though hundreds of students and parents were camped outside its premises in the scorching heat, hoping to register on-site.

The university's student leaders had demanded that students be allowed to register on campus.

A strong contingent of security in black uniforms were visible outside the gates of its Kingsway Campus. Several students who were demanding to gain access to the university were chased away. ‎

But UJ's Deputy Vice Chancellor on strategic services Mpho Letlape said they had a 98% online registration in 2015 which proved successful. She said they did not allow walk-in registrations.

She told journalists they had improved their online system. as all payment would now happen online.

"We have an online chat facility since last Thursday and we have a call centre which opened on January 4," she said.

Letlape said they had received some 40 000 inquiries since Sunday. Of these, 3 200 had been assisted.

Meanwhile at Wits, university students gave management 24 hours to respond to a list of demands pertaining to late registration.

The university earlier suspended registration after SRC disruptions.

The SRC is demanding that ‎no students be financially excluded during the year, among other things.

Last year students across the country protested against fee increments. President Jacob Zuma later announced a 0% fee hike for 2016.

I haven't seen video footage yet, but what did the protesters do? Simply blocking roads or occupying buildings is not in itself violence. Neither is preventing registrations violent.

Yes it is, hell, a statue can be violent to these new age students (aka #rhodesmustfall).
 
"Decolonised Free Education". LOL. Okay, here's the deal - you can opt for the "decolonised" education stream which will be at no charge, but, in order to be properly decolonised, your studies may not, in any way, use or refer to any literature, research, technology or materials compiled on any other continent than Africa, and any such academic learning that has it's provenance in Africa post 1652 must conclusively be shown to have been arrived at with no influence or knowledge from any other continent than Africa. Good luck.

We are not necessarily disrupting registration. We are shutting down the university and if the university can"t operate then registration can't happen...

Aren't registration fees part of ones tuition fees, like a deposit?
