JOHANNESBURG – The #FeesMustFall protests toward free higher education will resume this morning at Wits and the University of Johannesburg (UJ), where students plan to protest the payment of registration fees.

Both universities say they're anticipating protests and occupation of parts of the campuses by students, but the registration process will continue.

Wits University says students receiving financial aid from the state won't have to pay R9,000 immediately while at UJ, the fee has been scrapped.

Students have been mobilising support for the resumption of the #FeesMustFall movement throughout last week and will today hit the ground running with demonstrations.

Registration officially opens today and Wits spokesperson Shirona Patel says they expect visitors and prospective students on campus.

She says security has been heightened.

“We believe that this may disrupt some registration and other university activities. The safety of students, staff and prospective students remains paramount, obviously.”

I thought they won when Zuma agreed to no fee increases this year?

No, it started going insane, there is a select group of people who continue to strike.

I wish I had a beach house, private tutors and burgers and coke any time I wanted :(
I am still living with my parents due to financial reasons, how the heck am I supposed to afford a private apartment?

First sentence: "All students". Next sentence: "Black student". They've lost my attention already, they don't want equal rights, they just want.

Edit: as you pointed out, there are white students who also can't afford accommodation and fees, but we're the only country in the world that has special rights for the majority and doesn't protect the minority.

I've never understood why residences aren't open during re-exams.

As for the second issue, read up on Malaysia: Bumiputera/URL]
The lie that SA is the only country with Affirmative Action for the majority of the population is often peddled.

Private tutors? I thought that tutors were available to everyone at university during the academic year.

Oh look ... another #SomethingMustFall thingy ....

Does the nation realise we are de-industrialising, we are not creating jobs, we are spending more than we make ... that better life for all is further away in 2016 than it was in 2015?

Oh well - have fun demonstrating.

That privilege and opulence belongs to those who come from Coca-Cola and hamburger cultural backgrounds.

Is this a silly riposte to the kfc culture often touted by imbeciles.

Wits student registration suspended

Student registration at Wits University has been suspended for the day following protests at the institution.

Wits Student Representative Council President Nompendulo Mkatshwa spearheaded student protests at the university's Hall 29, where onsite registration was meant to take place.

She told parents and students that the SRC would not permit any students to register until their demands were met by university management.

"Our intent is not to render theses institutions ungovernable... our intent is to ensure that every academically qualified student registers in the year 2016. An injury to one is an injury to all."

Mkatshwa said there was a concern among students around an extension of the 0% fee increase.

"Right now we have no certainty that we will have a 0% increment in the year 2017... we don't know when this tag team is going to start implementing structures towards free education," she said.

Mkatshwa said they were giving university management 24 hours to respond to their demands.

An assisting dean then addressed parents and said registrations was suspended for the day, and urged students to register online.

This protest follows last year's countrywide student demonstrations against fee increments for 2016.

President Jacob Zuma then said there would be no increase in fees for the year.

Meanwhile, there was also a police presence at the University of Johannesburg where some students claimed that their student cards had been blocked.

Big no-no there, this is very problematic. Human Rights has been spearheaded by the WITS SRC.

So they're effectively denying the right to education on the basis that education is a right?

Private tutors? I thought that tutors were available to everyone at university during the academic year.

Academic tutors are available in most courses during tutorial class. Whether they are used effectively or not is a different story.
I did two years of it, and 90% of the time it was students wanting me to hold their hand.
The students that did their homework and produced a list of specific questions were the ones that did well. The ones who didn't, well I took some delight in drawing a sad face on their tutorial test when they didn't bother writing anything other than their name.

So are they building residences for all those people that now must just be allowed to go register for free. How do they decide who gets free residence accommodation and who doesn't if there is enough space?
