Hey guys

I just have this unknown folder in my hard drive, I can't delete it, can't rename it, it just sits there, I don't know what to do..

I just hope it's not a virus or something.. the name of the folder is:

4e4a63e89146909a210f027ba44d0f

If anyone know how to get rid of it.. please tell me.. or if it's suppose to be there..

Thanks

I deleted 2 similar named folders earlier via linux earlier today.

If its a hidden folder that can only be seen when you enable seeing hidden folders and system files than.... its a system file created by windows to manage the drive (I think the recycle bin uses it). If it meets the above mentioned criteria (hidden and system file) than leave it alone, you can scan it with anti-virus if you worried. BTW had a virus last year at ukzn that used to infect these folders.f-secure wouldn't do anything to them but avira antivirus sorted the problem out. oh and if the file is small use your anti-virus's support to forward the file to them for analysis. It pays to buy anti-virus (well a good one anyway).

Windows updates, will probably get deleted next time you complete an update.

It could also be leftovers from a recent windows update

Yes, it is from windows updates - sometimes the folders don't get removed properly, and its a mild pain in the bottom to remove them.

Ensure that you have rebooted since you last applied updates.

The way to remove it is to right-click the folder, go to properties, and then switch to the security tab.
Click 'Advanced', then change to the 'Owner' tab.

Click either your userid, or 'Administrators' from the list, and click to select the checkbox marked 'Replace owner on subcontainer and objects'. Click OK.

Click 'Apply'. Click 'Advanced' again, on the default 'Permissions' tab, click the two checkboxes at the bottom - 'Inherit....blah blah' and 'Replace....blah blah'.
Click OK, and then OK again to close the dialogs. You should now be able to delete the folder.

It's not a hidden folder.. Like I have window 7, so it's normally on "do not show hidden folder"

And I check so yeah..

Hey~

Thanks for the long explainantion, but I managed to take care of it..

I just restarted the computer, and then it was gone!

Thanks alot!

But I think what you said is good to know as well..

Thanks!

How do you delete it using linux?

Sigh, I don't have that.. but anyway.. thanks

Insert an Ubuntu LiveCD, browse the drive and delete the folder, simple as that. It does not give a toss about windows permissions.

Oh.. but don't I need to like install things and then choose options etc etc.. and also I heard you need to partition your hard drive?

It's a LiveCD. You boot off it into a full blown OS, no need to install anything or partition any hard drives. It makes no changes to your existing setup, once you reboot and remove the cd it's business as usual.

Unless you followed earlier advice and deleted unknown directories and like render your system useless. However like ponder said it's safe to boot from the cd to test Linux (and only delete Windows files/directories that you know is not important - if need be).

I see.. so it has the function...

Great.. now I just have to find the software..

Thanks
