Unplugged router but 3MB usage per day

Explain this please: I have unplugged my router as I am using a 3G card for my internet connectivity but according to the bandwidth usage monitor I'm using 3mb a day, this over the last 2 days on the disconnected router. My ISP is Cybersmart...

Very nice idea for ISP’s.
Add 3MB of data per day to each of your users accounts and save a ton load in money.

Example:
3MB x 31 days x 10,000 users = Almost 1TB of data savings

Agreed except the router is physically unplugged.. If the program is updating itself it would be via the 3G connection...

Is the router unplugged as in power or is it unplugged as in network cables?

It might also be that the bandwidth monitoring application monitor all packets through the interface. As such continuous attempts to connect to the router could result in data moving in and out of the interface.

I know in Linux vnstat man pages specifically mention that if the interface goes down the data logged will be inaccurate. This might also be the case with your monitoring software.

Network cables but now the power cable is unplugged too and the usage seems to have ceased. That and I have Cybersmart monitoring the line...

That's cybersmart for you! I have complained sooo many time cause I have a similar problem. Their usage tracker don't work correctly. I have complained and all they did is telling me that the usage is correct and I'm wrong. That's why my cancellation fax is already sent!

Thing is are there really any viable alternatives? I'm sure whomever one uses our bandwidth monitoring/usage is at their discretion. We are vulnerable regardless...

I must say though since switching the router off the unexplained usage seems to have ceased...

N, not nonsense... This explanation from Cybersmart possibly best explains the point...

The connection to the exchange is made by your router and not the PC.
In order for the session to stay open your router sends and receives packets in 0.00001 form.

The fact that you had only unplugged the network cable and not the powercable would point at the router using minimum amounts of bandwidth - which makes sense seeing that it is connected to cybersmart. The fact that after you switched it off altogether it stopped only confirms this fact. A bit of logic Cavedog!!! instead of going off on a rant - the answer is right in front of us there...................

I have checked the reported usage of various isps and to be honest all of them correlate more or less with what my firewalls are reporting. I am with Cybersmart myself and can guarantee you that the reported usage IS correct. Unless you want to argue about 1 mb variance on a gig or something - trust it it is right.

How long have you been with cybersmart? Hmmm. You are questioning me. I know what i use I know what I see! I'm not stupid! Been a user of cybersmart since May 2007 so you can't tell me anything about cybersmart!

I've been on cybersmart from about june 2007 and even if dont use the net or even switch my pc on for the entire day, there is an usage of around 16 megs a day. thats 16x30 thats around 480 megs a month!

Cyber smart cant even acount for this, apparently its my software but I just left my router on with the ethernet cable disconnected. Looks like Im gonna be changing isps soon

Probably the router checking for BIOS upgrades and updating its time against an NTP server on a daily basis.

But 3mb per day still seems excessive for the above.

Cavedog, I have been with Cybersmart for about 5 years. I have several customers linked to them, I also have customers linked to other ISPs. For many of our customers we measure the bandwidth they use and without fail it correlates. As I said, not only with Cybersmart, with the other ISPs..... I am afraid that you are not willing to see reason though because "I can't tell you anything about cybersmart"..............

Well this past weeken was the first time that I got 3MB per day when no-use at the office -

Granted the router was powered up - but why only this past weekend????

It is of course very weird that mine is also 3MB per day. Me smells conspiracy brewing...

I think they stealing bw. My port log shows its from my site - but is it initiated by cybersmart ???
