Unshaped ADSL tests - shocking

Woohoo - looks like I <b>may</b> be winning this little battle. They asked me to re-test and here's some good looking results as of about 5.30pm today: (let's hope it holds)

<b>new unshaped ADSL</b>

Hi Guys sorry this is a bit off topic here, but seeing that we are discussing ping times and there seem to be a lot of clever people here!! Can anyone explain this. Basically i have a 3 comp network at home. All running Windows XP. The internet gateway is connected via ISDN and connects to a SMC Wireless router which is basically just acting as a wireless AP (DCHP,NAT,Firewall all switched off - done on the gateway comp with windows ICS and software firewall). I have a laptop and a computer in the lounge which the kids use. I have done pings repeatedly to various international servers and the pings shown below are common and repeatable. How is it that the computer in the lounge is getting sub 70 pings to the usa?? It makes no sense!! Any Ideas??

Someone may be able to help - but I've seen that before. I'm pretty sure it's an incorrect reading - it may be the ping to the gateway, or just a problem in XP.

Would be better if we could see a tracert.

Dont ask me what it means but i dont believe it. Any other computer on the network gives 300ms pings, but i will be auctioning the computer to the highest bidder so get yours in now!!

Now i am really confused. I was pretty sure that this was just a windows problem misreading something somewhere, so i have rebooted expecting to get more "normal" pings, but guess what still claims to be getting ave 70ms to google. So here is my question for someone who knows a bit more that me!! Does the host computer have anything to do with the ping time. My understanding is that ping is only influenced by the routing path. Secondly are there any known issues in XP where pings are misread. Is there any other way to test my ping?? I understand that some game servers have that function but have never gamed before so if someone can point me in the right direction i will give it a try.

Then from my side obviously low international ping of vital to games that I play and you getting 70 avg ping is amazing. 70 = no lag in games and nowadays getting 70 ping LOCALLY is a mission.

But I have had as low as 180 pings before and lately my avg seems to be 250 so IT CAN go much lower!


Dammit maybe *holds thumbs* you discovered something here which could benefit us all!! but then again it could be some obscure problem that causes things to be lower [?][?]


If however it is not a problem *holds thumbs again* and by some <b>miracle</b> settings in windows XP causes packets not to be hijacked by telkom *cough* this could change the lifes of gamers throug out the country [:D][:D]

Most if not all games have means to play over the internet and in most it's a matter of starting, going to the game menu from single player to selecting multiplayer -&gt; internet -&gt; refresh/update list and the game would automatically ping sites from all over the world and display servers and their pings.

and ping gaming servers with this program (although It sometimes shows 400 and when I connect with the game it's 250 ingame so not always accurate in my opinion)
 
I'm willing to bet money that it's an XP configuration issue. While 250ms to Europe is good, I too have seen lower (as low as 165ms with ADSL - but I don't think it can go much lower than that). There was a similar ping issue over at the Baspnet forums (http://forum.baspnet.net/) a while back. Unfortunately there are forums are down, but about a year ago someone was reporting 60-80ms pings to the USA via Storm ISDN. It turned out to be a modem issue, if I'm not mistaken. There is an explanation - I just don't have it :) ! But I am pretty sure it's an error - if it's a true reading then there's no reason why other PC's on the network aren't getting the same reading, since they're all sharing the same internet connection.

Does anyone know how long it actually takes the average bit to get from our beaches to the US's? (Not including any overhead on each end).

BTW, I've been playing CS for the past couple of days, with my pings to local servers averaging around 40ms the first evening. Yesterday and much of today all the Pretoria-based servers were pinging at over 100ms. I was worried my 40ms the day before was a once-off thing! :)

It's all better now, but I'm curious as to what sort of thing could cause that.
 
Well if we're talking theoretical then this simple calculation should suffice :

t = (Distance to US via UK) / (Speed of light in glass)
t = ~15000km / ~200000km/s
t = 0.075s (75ms)

Obviously in reality this is slowed down substantially by fibre repeaters and routers along the way.

Hi,

Notice that the IP address you are pinging changes for the same DNS name.

Yahoo uses the services of Akamai - a company who provide globally distributed caching for big web services. So in the last case you were sent to a local Yahoo cache.

The intention will be for this to happen every time, but DNS records take time to expire so it isn't immediate.

Its nice to see people giving telkom some grief about thier crappy international latency problem. Im currently playing warcraft3 for the south african team sponsored by arena77 and i cant get better than 380 ping atm to battle.net. So id be gratefull for any solutions anyone has come up with to get that latency down. I would get unshaped if it would drop my ping significantly but from what iv seen it doesnt seem to be doing that atm =/
 
Oh ye and btw sybawoods, do u have any updates on the pings...they getting better or worse? Also if u got the time could u plz ping europe.battle.net with ur unshaped account and tell me what u get. THX :)
