Count my vote - and as a dev. !

I know this might seem like heresy, but it might be an idea to push for the VMC software to become an Open Source project, or to have an Open Source alternative to the VMC s/w - on Sourceforge.net...something that works on other platforms as well, does whatever it needs to do for sms sending/receiving, VLive via data card, etc etc etc...

Not a bad idea, but I would see this as an user initiative, like nearly all Sourceforge projects.

Maybe TT can rally up a few developers and put something together.

Officially, I can't see Vodafone going this route (yet) as there still is a general reluctance amongst corporates to go open source, especially for their own products.

I know of one group in Cape Town who developed their own Windows GUI for the data cards, but it's for their own in-house usage.

I agree that it would be a customer-centric-initiative, perhaps we should rally support amongst the other forums world-wide that have Vodafone 3G customers...? Does anyone know the urls of such forums?

Just searched sourceforge.net for any existing projects, nothing really under 'vodafone', but '3g' has several projects - only 2 have files - the rest are still planning etc, but the point is that we can do it and we can put whatever features we want into it .

Today it's not working at all. Shut down and restarted, no difference.

When I start the software the card goes into a rapid flash mode, then the red led, and the software doesn't connect to it and needless to say, no network. After a while a SIM error and it crashes.

So I'm back on my long distance unreliable wifi connection.

Funny that, having to use an unreliable connection since my fancy new 3G system doesn't work.

I've been into computers for 20 years, been programming professionally for 17 years. AND I CAN'T GET THIS TO WORK! Pitty the poor sucker "normal users" out there ...

Dead card

I spent five hours yesterday trying to get my 3G to work including hours on the line to 155.

Conclusion: the card is dead.

This included reinstalling the software (a few times), installing version 4, deleting profiles, creating new profiles, deleting the Vodafone entry from the registry (the uninstall doesn't clean up), deleting the C:\Program Files\Vodafone (the uninstall doesn't clean up), swapping sim cards, attempting to do a firmware upgrade etc etc.

Eventually even the guys at 155 had to agree the card is stuffed.

So I went to the Vodashop to have it swapped and they wanted to send it to Joburg. Said I had to wait seven days. Luckily an incident of road range on the way to town (someone in front of me chucked out a sigarette and it hit my car, grrr) had primed me so I threw my toys out the cot. 15 Minutes later I left with a new card.

Maybe this is why the software crashes so often because my card was slowly dying on me. Will keep you posted if it improves (and if not!) ...

Btw has anyone noticed the minimum specification on the back of the box: 32 MB RAM. Since VMConnect uses 25 MB where's the operating system going to run?! Har har har.
