Hi

So Ive decided to purchase a 27 inch iMac.

Owning an iPad & knowing that Apple has a very quick replacement cycle, are there any new model iMacs to be launched soon?
What and when is Apple's re-cycle on iMacs?

I agree with MrMocs. The current iMacs are pretty powerful machines. Load up on some extra RAM (aftermarket, not at Apple/Core's inflated prices) and you'll have a setup that will serve for years. However ...

1. The introduction of "retina" displays to the iPad does raise the question of when this is likely to happen to the Mac line. Right now an iOS developer actually cannot display a pixel-by-pixel representation of an iPad app on the iMac's 27" screen. Insane, I know. On a Mac Pro you might replace the card and monitor, but if that sort of pixel density ever comes to the iMac line it means buying a new machine. As people become used to the iPad graphics, they will start to complain about their bleeding eyeballs when they go back to their computer monitor. It has to happen, it's just a question of when it becomes economically viable.

2. When last did we see an actual new design coming out of Sir Jonathan's workshops? They must be working on something.

The lessons learnt from manufacturing very high volumes of ipad retina displays(50 million+) should push the date forward by quite a bit , but i doubt they will be able to viably manufacture 20"+ retina grade displays within the next two years. I suspect we might see the macbook air/pros get them within 12 months, but not the imacs.

I'm thinking 36 months.

But ja, mmmmmm, can't wait.

A macbook Air's 11" screen should not be that much harder than an iPad's 9.5", once the strain on manufacturing capacity eases off (initial shipment of iPads sold out in 24 hours?). But for the bigger screens, I'm afraid I have to agree with you.

Yes we will get Retina display Macs sometime, but probably on the Macbook range first. Hope they're IPS too.

Apple did the iPad keynote last week with the following statement, mmm:

"And across the year, you’re going to see a lot more of this kind of innovation. We are just getting started.”

Ja, the macbooks should get it within the next year, probably after mountain lion.

Interestingly, Lion does have some of the "resolution independence' stuff in the form of an HiDPI mode which you can enable after installing x code, but its not complete. Mountain lion should finish that off. Its the same technique used in IOS.

Lol $70 for that?! They should throw in a big jar of vaseline with that. You can do the same thing for almost nothing with stuff lying around.
I've tried doing something similar on my previous MBP where the HDD SATA died. I wanted to put the HDD on the CD/DVD SATA, which still works, but the connectors are different. :o

I wouldn't be surprised if the same were true with the iMac.

thanks guys...will wait for the new models....until then XP will hang as usual

The new model will likely be a minor upgrade from the current. As we've speculated here, it's unlikely that the 27" mac will get a retina display. Probably the only upgrade will be from Sandy Bridge to Ivy Bridge, so if you see a decent price on a new 27", by all means buy, don't wait.

I just hope that they put in good GPU's into the new ones, not that the current ones are bad, but it would be nice to have a GPU push the Retina display to the max (that is if the retina display comes to the iMac)

Shame.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your finances and sanity. My condolences
