How much data does an update like that use? Local or Intl? (guesstimate, I know its not done yet)

I'm trying to work out at what point it will be cheaper to re-download an uptodate iso vs reformatting and updating every time.

On my fully updated 8.04 release, the update manager tells me I "will have to download 685Mb of data in order to complete the update to 8.10".

I said 'no thank you'. Will wait for the final on 30 Oct.

That rather sucks. So you have to download the whole thing even if you're just updating. I would have thought that it would just download the bits that need to be updated.

Seems the "bits that need updating" are all the bits of the OS - hence after the update you would have a new version installed.

I have dloaded the 8.10 beta, get your self a local only account from axxess and brows to one of your local friendly ftp prviders in the "what to do with your local cap" and dload it for less that R12.00
but to be honest I will rather wait till 30 october to download the alternate iso and upgrade 8.04 then.
good luck with the new network manager when you do go this direction.....

Well a version update is basically replacing eveything from the previous OS. So how do you figure it would be less?

best bet would be to dload the alternate install and upgrade from that, this way if things go belly up with your install (and trust me they do) then you already have the 8.10 install on a cd somewhere and dont have to do a download again

Surely not everything is changed in each minor update?

Just like SP2 for windows xp doesn't replace every single file....just the ones that did change.

If everything does change then they should really think about implementing a differential update for the files.

Remember that it is likely updating most of your programs, not just the os.. So the more programs you have installed, the bigger the download(mine wants to download around 900MB!).

+1
I do find it less messy to format and reinstall, but for the ease of not having to reinstall all your applications, I would probably advise to update rather than reinstall.

I was expecting something around the 200mb mark. At that point it could tip either way (I've managed to break *nix a few times already)...since it would be 200mb x3 formats versus 700mb iso. But ISO it is then...

Next batch of questions for the clever people::)

How much of the k/ubuntu world is mirrored by the SA server? e.g. Is the newest OO version always there? FF? Last time I checked it looked like only an out-dated FF was available.

What would one use for virtualization if *nix is the host OS? VMWare server? Or is there something better?

One can change the default/first OS choice on Grub, right?

Thanks

I use the official local ubuntu mirror (the mirror.ubuntu.com one) that runs off my local cap. My FireFox is the newest one...

VM: You can use either VMWare server, or you can also use VirtualBox. Both have their pros and cons. I tend to prefer VirtualBox though. It has up to 128MB VRAM which does help somewhat (VMW has 8MB).

You can customise that in Grub, yes. Not sure where to do it from [K/]Ubuntu but it is possible. I do it in opensuse with a YAST utility.

Also ubuntu.mirror.ac.za

VMWare will work. Virtualbox is also well documented (and dead easy).

With regards to grub, I'm not sure what you mean, but have you got the startupmanager package installed? You can change your grub's default selection with that (as well as timeouts, themes, etc).

Edit: froot's quicker on the gun tonight :-/

Re-Edit:

And if you don't feel like installing startupmanager, you can edit your /boot/grub/menu.lst

BACKUP FIRST!! (I can't stress this enough :o)

Then look for the line starting "default" followed by a number. Make the number the number of the OS in the list (0 for the first in the list, 1 for the second, etc)

virtual box by sun is good because its free and runs both on windows and linux host and has a good setup interface.

What upgrade is available from Gutsy gibbons? I'm hopefully going to the kiosk thing at anal walk this week and will get a dist if i can upgrade without fresh install.

I'm not sure if you can dist-upgrade from a disc. But if you can, then look at getting Hardy 8.04.1 LTS.
Remember, though, that 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) will be out end of October
