Hope this is right for this section .... seems the logical place. Anyway, I am gonna get a new PC and don't want to go through the process of d/loading a couple hundred mb's (or however much) to get my antivirus up to date coz my current one is up to date. So ..... is there a file that I could copy and paste in the new install? And is that same type of file available in Ad-Aware?

Thanks for any info. :D

Using Avast as an example, the install file is about 20 megs, and if you chose to download the defintion file off their site, it's about 13 megs. If you just do an online update once Avast is installed, virus defs are a couple hundred kilobytes. Nothing major.

Ad-aware has a definitions file you can download seperately, it's about 6 megs zipped. Once again, doing an update through the program itself makes things easier and smaller.

By far the biggest defs I've ever seen belong to Symantec based products, and hopefully you are not making use of their stuff

Depends on your AV program. Remember you going to have to re-install the antivirus program, and there are probably a whole pile of program updates, appart from just the virus defs.

I would do the online update if i was you.

Why are you fussing over 20 or 30 meg anyway? useing a phone line or something?

Ok, didn't realise they were such small things :D I had visions of a couple hundred megs ...... but I'll obviously just do the online update no worries. Thanks chaps.

Not a couple hundred... maybe 20 - 50 at most, well thats what I have to download when installing bitdefender after a format
