Updates on the UUNet ADSL Network

I want to jump on to the uncapped offering, purely to play local games/ download demos...so Angellus keep me informed of pings, thanks :)
 
Celemasiko, I can understand your feelings towards being "limited" in what one can do regarding the connection that you obtain from an ISP, and I too would be against being limited in such a way. However, the unfortunate reality in South Africa is that we just do NOT have the bandwidth (okay, that's actually a bit of a lie, we DO have the bandwidth, but it's not actually affordable to ISP's - we can blame Telkom for that) to be able to sustain something as bandwidth intensive as BitTorrent (and BitTorrent specifically).

In an ideal world Telkom would sell at wholesale prices, or we would perhaps even have multiple players that could supply affordable bandwidth to resellers (read ISP's) and then we COULD have "decent" and "affordable" uncapped and unshaped ADSL. Unfortunately, this is not an ideal world, this is South Africa, and we have to make do with the fact that, at the moment anyway, Telkom is the only supplier and marks up the prices on bandwidth significantly compared to international players.

Is it embarrassing? It certainly is, but unfortunately until ICASA sorts things things out (here's hoping) and legislation opens the market significantly more than it has, it's unlikely we will see anything that would be on-par with international offerings, neither on price nor performance.

Thanks for your understanding....I like the way you responded to my queries. I hope ICASA finds a solution, which suits all of us, especially us small customers. I know we are much more privileged then others having ADSL, but I really don't think any one of us have money to throw it out of the window.

If I have to pay so much money for a purchase, I want to be delivered what I signed for and what I pay for. (Already I dont get what I paid for from Telkom...should my ISP now do the same???) And I pay a lot of money which is another huge burden to my monthly budget.
Suggestion: Why not introducing a shaping during working hours to protect businesses and leave it open after hours and weekends, until ICASA sorted out this bunch of Telcrap mafiosis....hopefully....
 
Bittorent

Thats a good suggestion, but its a pity that legit bittorrent downloads can't be differenciated from illegal as bittorrent is a nice way of downloading Linux apps and saving bandwidth worldwide in general, instead of using and stressing ftp mirrors.
 
Well ATM the pings are still at a solid 350ms I don't understand how this could have happened in one day! Thursday was fine and then Friday complete shock and horror! 350ms pings to local. I don't think Bittorrent could cause this in one day could it? Unless there were a lot of new accounts sold on friday! Once again I have to say downloads and everything else is fine on 384k and currently downloading at 40K from gamespot.com

Could someone please explain how the pings shot up in one day and have remained constant?

Oh yeah just want to also say for gaming UUNET is useless ATM anyone wanting to sign up wait till pings are back down to normal. If gaming is not No.1 for you then this is still the best thing ever IMHO. Evrything at full speed!!!!
 
i still rate that this ayce account i have is great im getting amazing pings for gaming downloading from edonkey at full speed(well not always if there arent that ppl with a file) for me uunet isnt for gamers only businees who dont want a cap.

adsl is amazing for local gaming pretty kuk for int gaming but there isnt anything better in its price range. isdn costs to much specially you gaming on 128k and the line drops every 2 hour o well there another 14 rand :)
 
AYCE won't work for me I have traffic of 35GB so far for this month. I am not saying it's bad cos it isn't, a friend of mine is using it but it's too expensive. Think it was R980, correct me if I'm wrong, and I am paying R718.20 per month for uncapped. Very happy with it just want gaming pings to be fixed soon. Don't want to spend R250 on a 3GB account for gaming but if I have to I probably will.
 
well like i said 30 gigs is hard for me to reach. ive been downloading like crazy and im only on around 20 gigs and outta ideas for stuff
 
30 GB would not help me....its too little. Video on Demand from Germany is a huge bandwith eater...

Well here is an update on the SGS pings. Bad news I'm afraid pings are now even worse. Sitting at 400ms-500ms and now some of the servers don't even work. Could someone please answer my question from a couple of posts back: How could the pings die overnight?? It just happened didn't go down slowly
 
dude you best bet is drop uunet and go sign with one of those 599 for 30 gigs then you can game lekka with pings of 20ms worst case ping maybe 35ms local that is


what site is that cele i mean the german stuff wanna check out the quality
 
Arcor is one of the best German ISP's. They have that, what I call "broadband" Here in SA we do not have broadband...., we have only a bit faster internet.

Broadband to me is UNCAPPED, UNSHAPED at a speed of minimum 2000/384 and at a price below 300 Rand inclusive everything. (Free router in most of the cases).
