From RIM (press statement):

The software on your BlackBerry® smartphone powers the features and functionality you love. By updating that software, you may be able to enjoy new features or enhancements.

Whether it's a brand new software version, or an incremental update, there are many advantages to updating. Here are a few ways to do it.

BlackBerry Desktop Software

Head for the BlackBerry® website to download the latest version of the BlackBerry® Desktop Manager software. BlackBerry Desktop Software features an updated interface and user-friendly menu that allows you to simply connect, synchronise, manage and update your BlackBerry smartphone.
• For PC, please click here to download BlackBerry Desktop Manager: http://uk.blackberry.com/services/desktop/
• For Mac, please click here to download BlackBerry Desktop Manager: http://uk.blackberry.com/services/desktop/desktop_mac.jsp

Once you have BlackBerry Desktop Software installed, follow these steps to load software on your BlackBerry smartphone:
1. Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer using the USB cable and open BlackBerry Desktop Software
2. A red star will pop up next to the word "software" if your device needs a software upgrade. Alternatively, click on the "device menu" on the top left corner of the BlackBerry Desktop Software screen. Click Update
3. Select whether you want to be notified by email when an updated version of your BlackBerry Device Software is available (ensure that the Backup device data field is checked)
4. Click Install update
5. Keep the BlackBerry smartphone connected until the process is complete (please note this may take up to 30 minutes to finish)
6. When the process has completed, the message "Your software update is complete" will appear
7. Click Close to return to BlackBerry Desktop Software

Web-based update

To see if you have the most recent software, or there are updates available, connect your smartphone to your computer via USB, visit http://uk.blackberry.com/update/ and click the “Check for Updates” button. Simply follow the steps and instructions from here.
Please note: Until the update is complete, you will not be able to use your BlackBerry smartphone. Should you unplug or cancel the update process before completion, your smartphone may be unusable and you may need to restart the update process to regain use of your device.

Over-the-air updates for smartphones

You can now update your BlackBerry smartphone OTA (Over-the-air) without connecting to a laptop or Mac.
1. From your BlackBerry home screen, browse to the Options icon and select
2. Browse to the Device icon and select
3. In the Devices list, select Software Updates
4. Select Perform Update and follow the steps

Go to http://uk.blackberry.com/update/index.html?page=1&step=1 for a step by step demo.

Should you be a BlackBerry smartphone user and you need any assistance with updating your device software, please contact us for support. When you do so, please provide us with your BlackBerry smartphone model and the software version it is running - hold in Alt on the device and type 'escr' to check the software version.

I've got a 9300 running OS5 software. If I upgrade to OS6 which software would be the latest without the battery drain and memory leak?
Also in OS6 is there a seperate option for switching using 2G, 3G and 2G and 3G like the current OS5 has.

Thanks

I just updated my Blackberry software last week. To Android.
Give it a try. Seriously, you won't look back

Yes there are separate options.
btw anyone try OTA updates ?

I've tried OTA a few times and it always says "your software is up to date", I know it's not, since there is a version after the OS6 build I have (9300). I have no issues with my phone, so I won't download the update manually, just don't have the data for it :p
