I've currently got a 4meg line (have had for ages) and am eagerly awaiting for it to be upgraded to something quicker. I called Telkom the other day to enquire. They said my exchange doesn't support it.
One of my clients who is in the same centre as me (upstairs) is running a 6meg line. Is it possible that they are on a different exchange? I find it very strange that my exchange hasn't been upgraded...
My office is in the Rivonia, Sandton area.
Anyone perhaps got a contact who can clarify that my exchange doesn't infact support greater than 4meg?

I've got the same issue on my home ADSL. Your exchange probably contains multiple DSLAMs, some newer and some older (or some with old firmware/upgrades and some with new firmware/upgrades). The newer ones support ADSL2+ and allow you to connect at speeds higher than 4mbps. The older ones connect at max 4mbps. You're probably on the older one. Trying to get Telkom to change you from an old DSLAM to a new DSLAM in the same exchange is almost impossible. Believe me I've tried. They say you'll just have to wait. If your line supports 10mbps, it will automatically be upgraded. You don't have to do anything.

One of our lines at work, connected to a small "containerised" exchange in the Bundus, started syncing at 6mbps 2 weeks ago. Our other 3 lines all still sync at 4mbps, and Telkom couldn't upgrade. They said we just have to wait.

If you're really desperate, and don't mind blowing some cash, you could apply for a new line with ADSL. Ask for 10mbps. You'll probably be connected to the newer faster DSLAMs. If it does, you can then cancel your old line, unless you REALLY must keep your tel number. You might possibly be able to transfer your tel number to the new line, once it is cancelled.

That's an interesting idea.... I've got 3 lines so I can apply for ADSL on one of the other ones.

Number PM'd to Qwikslver so long...
