Hi Guys

I am looking at getting my son a new graphics card for his birthday in March.

Currently using a XFX 8800GT ... which I purchased at the time because it represented good bang for ones buck.

I have been out of the hardware scene lately so any advice on which card I should consider.

Thanks in advance.
super dad

Why does it need replacing? I can still play most of today's releases on high with my XFX 8800GT ............

Ye if his monitor is no bigger than 19", I'd get him something else.. Maybe a bigger monitor, but then you'd also have to buy a better GPU :D

Yes, I understand that and agree.

I was thinking of using it (XFX 8800GT XXX ed )for my daughters PC and get him a new one.

He is using a Samsung 22" 2232GW, quad core system.

Well if money isn't the object here, then yeah, I suppose you could go for a new powerhouse ..... apparently those ATI cards are the shiz (the name/model escapes me atm :o)

Edit: found them ..... an HD4850 / HD4870 and an HD4870x2

Depending on the amount of money you have:

4850 if your on a budget
nvidia gtx 260 if you a fanboy

4870 or even a 4870x2 if your feeling like being the most super dad of all time :p, if your really feeling like a super dad you cold get him the nvidia 295 :)

Well then yes I recommend a 4870 512mb (1GB only has a benefit at 1920x1200 or larger) or GTX260 216, that'll be the sweet spot for that res, and will compliment his CPU bandwidth-wise.

Recommend: 4870 512mb
Reason: Cheaper than the 1GB ver., and pretty much matches the 260.

Dude actually your wrong 1gb has benefits far beyond res, look at gta you could not higher with cars and density because it runs out of video memory.

You should not buy anything less than a 1gb card these days.

Cool, info taken. 1GB ver. then.

wow I have the XFX 8800GT and I personally don't see myself upgrading this card for another year at least! I am yet to find a game that I can't run on full, or close enough and still get amazing performance. This card is still way up there IMHO.

well must say my HD4850 is kinda struggling running games in full (like farcry 2)

WHAT!? I run FC on MAXXXXX and it is smoother than a babys bum :D It is actually on of the best running games on my PC.

I would say stick to nvidia.. I have a 4870 512mb and well it's not much better than my 8800GTX 512MB... (it it is better..mmmmm)

I'll go for the 280GTX or the 4870X2....

maybe the 9800 GTX+ or the GTX 285 or HD 4870?? Ether i think will work great depending on your budget.
Im still trying to decide which one

NO WAY!!! Really???????

I second that, can we see a screen shot of settings and fraps rate? im trying to decide on a card, if you get that... i will be very happy with the 9800
