Upgrade from a polo hatch 1.2tsi- Small SUV next

Good day all

Got myself a bakkie, double cab 2018 2.2 ford ranger. Coming this week hopefully.

But now, thinking of starting a family soon, my wife's polo just seems too small. She asked me to start looking around for the next upgrade. Not to large, she's piss scared to drive big vehicles :/
We've got friends that had a cx 3, now a cx 5. So we know the cars, the wife loves the cx 3. We tested the ecosport trend this week and although it felt nice to drive, the interior felt cheap and pressing a little to hard the plastic makes that crackling noise. Mazda felt a lot more better built. Plus, 2.0 engine

I've tried telling her Cx 5, but no.

Looking around, quite a few CX 3's between R240 000 to 280 000 , A/T with low km's

Any other options you guys think would be a great consideration? Keeping good value and decent built quality. Thanks!
 
Firstly you and your wife should understand that some of those SUVs have a smaller boot than your current Polo, the Mazda for instance has a smaller boot in standard format than the Polo, it is only when you fold the seats that you have more space, so just because it's bloated from outside does not mean it's big on the inside.

Consider the Mahindra XUV 500, the Opel Crossland, Citroën Aircross C3. To be really honest with you the best car for this new chapter in your life is a Honda Jazz, but I know your wife would probably scoff at that, but it has a boot that is much bigger than all of those SUVs and we all know about their magic seats.

Stick with the polo.

The bakkie is for private use, but there are days when i need a bakkie. My focus is getting banged up with these farm roads i tend to go to once in a while.

As far as boot space, yea i agree. It's the same space as the polo in the boot.

I tried again to tell her about the size difference between the cx 3 and 5

In depends SUV helped me quite a bit, where I live. The robot give's very little time to turn into my road, and there is a big trucking company nearby that hogs the road and builds up traffic. With a suv I drive next to the road, saves me time which saves me money :P

CX-3 and Cx-5 both good cars and have good automatic gearboxes.

Just make sure you don't get poverty spec ones, it has to have infotainment screen. If you buying from mazda dealer, let them upgrade it to support apple car play and android auto as part of the deal.

I wouldn't mind one at all. I understand the SUV thing though as my car is quite low and I've many times wished I've had a vehicle with a higher ground clearance.

Besides that it's expensive and underspecced, it's butt ugly as well. Hyundai tends to make very classy looking cars usually, the creta is not one of those.

I don't have an issue with looks, they are subjective, I have a problem when they pull a fast one on car buyers with their overpriced cars with less features, it makes me sad.

But that being said you really don’t need an SUV because you are having a family.

The far cleverer thing would be to pay it off and NOT buy another car and free up the cash flow instead of the expenses in the years ahead.

We went from a Gold with our first kit to a Kia Picanto for our second and it’s perfectly fine.

For that matter don’t even bother buying the stupid pram either as you’ll almost never use the bloody thing and just waste your money, so it’s even more pointless to buy a car around the thing.

In retrospect I may have opted for the Kia Rio had the newer one already been launched then, so a Polo would do you just fine.

If you absolutely feel you need to change the car I fully agree a Station Wagon is the way to go over an SUV. I had a Audi A4 wagon courtesy car for a week or two and it completely changed my mind on those. All the versatility of a bakkie without the hassles of one.

Doubt your SUV in reality goes anywhere more special than a Polo can really.

It’s more a mindset of driving the car and thinking it’s more rugged and can go more places and yet it’s 95% the same components and clearance etc.

We can't really brush off the fact that it has more ground clearance which counts a lot, so it's basically a comparison between two FWD cars, one with good good clearance and the other one without.

Yeah IF that is true or more often than not it’s true but inconsequential.
