So I purchased a mushkin source sata iii 2.5 ssd 500gb and 2x4gb ram from Wootware. I wanted to upgrade my Lenovo T410. It has a toshiba 300gb 7200rpm hdd. I have windows 7 proffessional loaded. I used Macrimum Reflect as recommended by a Wootware customer.

After cloning the harddrive (4hours), i replaced the ram and the hdd. Laptop did not boot claimed no operating system on ssd. Anyway swap the drives. Now it does not boot. Stays on start windows. If I boot in safe mode it stays on the following line;

Loaded:\windows\system32\DRIVERS\avdevport.sys

I tried a few times, same problem.

I've never tried cloning so can't give you a fix. I can only suggest a fresh install on the ssd and then after you are setup, attach the old hdd as an external drive and copy over any files needed.

Put the old RAM back, and run System Restore, that might get it booting on the old drive.
Unfortunately there's a lot that can go wrong when simply cloning the HDD to SSD. I always just use the opportunity to do a fresh install

I inserted the clone ssd in an external usb enclosure, and it seems all my files are there. If i do a clean windows 7 install, do I need my licence key? I bought the laptop at my previous company, dont have the licence key.

Jirre what is it with people who don't keep their license keys in a safe place...

I suspect you may not even need the license key. When I did a few fresh installs on our home laptops, it never asked for it. I think Windows calls home to an MS server and authenticates your fresh install based on a previous legit install on the same machine. So long as it's the same motherboard. Well that was for Win10, but will probably be the same for 7 and 8.

Update. Fresh install. SSD is amazing. Laptop feels new. The new ram was the reason the laptop was not booting. I purchased G.Skill DDR3-1600 4gb x 2 ram, based on this recommendation:
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkP...-T/T410-with-G-Skill-DDR3-1600-4GB/m-p/735013

I will now attempt to change 1 slot at a time, maybe 1 of the new ram was faulty.

Yes. We all felt that way when we first installed an SSD. :)

But you still get some old farts who don't see the benefit. I remember reading somewhere on this forum some users saying they would never spend that much on an SSD, because they were looking rand for rand at the cost per MB. :X3:

So the ram is not working. It appears on the Lenovo forums that 1.35 volts ram dont work only 1.5 volts DDR3 works

Never change more than one item of hardware at a time. If you are doing both RAM and hss to ssd, do the ram first. Let Windows organise itself then do the clone. A actually did one last night with Macrimum and a WD blue and it worked 100%

This. and be very careful about what you buy! make absolutely sure what you buy is compatible with the motherboard in the machine. Check and check again preferable on a completely independent source. Then buy.
