Upgrade not available at 22 months - why?

Hi

I was recently sent a message by MTN saying that I am eligible for an upgrade. However, when I call 808 or go into my MTN Active account, I am told I am not.

I am in month 22 of two separate contracts, and both say they are not eligible for an upgrade. The terms and conditions clearly state:

All customers who are in month 5 of a 6 month contract, 11 of a 12 month contract, 16 of an 18 month contract and 21 of their 24 month contract will be eligible for an upgrade evaluation.

I cannot reach an operator, as I am cut off after 10 minutes of holding (this has happened 3 times in a row).

How can I get hold of someone to help me get a new device? I am tempted to go with another carrier at this rate.

I actually think MTN made it 1 month earlier than their T&C's state. I think they changed it from the 21 month to 20th month. I got SMS to upgrade my account but I'm in month 20.....

... will be eligible for an upgrade evaluation...

Here is the important part, evaluation. If you have a reasonable spend on your contract, you will get an upgrade early, if you are on a low end contract with no over billing, they will not do an early upgrade. Same story with Vodacom.

Doubt that is how it works. Got my Top Up 100 contract for like 4 years and I see I can upgrade on month 20..... My monthly bill is R129 and was never more than that.....

Is this your first upgrade ? If so, yes then it's 21 months or so. But consecutive ones will be 24month from the time of the last upgrade (if you took it early). Your contract end date still stays the same.

Are you sure about that? Maybe I'm not understanding what you are saying but my contract has ALWAYS been in month 20 from last upgrade date. These last few months left should I choose to upgrade simply fall away and the new 24 months start from the day my contract is upgraded meaning that I save on the last few months of the device cost because that falls away and means that I just have to do another 20 months then I can upgrade again.

Always been like this for me no matter what contract I take or what device I took.

it does not fall away. They keep it to hold you by the short and curlies...

try cancel at that point, then see what happens.

I have before. Nothing happens. I was never told to pay any of the months after the upgrade. I had a MTN contract before this one and it was upgraded twice and then I just cancelled it when the 24 months lapsed....

What happens to unspent airtime when you migrate to another package at the end of the 24 month contract? Does it get lost or carried over?

I think it gets lost if you migrate to another package for example Anytime > MTN Choice

I can't remember if if you upgrade to the same package but just another phone if the unspent inclusive value get forfeited.

At the moment I am in an anytime 200 but want to go to a sim only my choice contract. Since it is month 20 I assume they want me to wait till month 24 else slap me with device subsidy fees again.

Will call them tomorrow to check.
