I just want to pick your brains on the upgrade options available in SA currently . . .

I have iPhone 6 and waited for the iPhone 7 release, however after the release I'm considering opening up my options and am looking at other phones/brands (specifically the flagship units). I'm anticipating high prices for the iPhone 7 as the iPhone 6s prices are already high now, and I don't expect them to drop dramatically with the launch of IPhone 7.
I like to multi-task and use productivity apps often, and more importantly the camera needs to be good, if it has manual controls it is a plus. (I'm into photography). I also listen to podcasts and music daily.

What options should I consider?

This. Unless your phone is damaged an upgrade is not worth it.

Ja it sounds very like the "I must upgrade" logic which is never a must.

If you have to ask what you need to get it means you don't want anything and therefore don't need anything.

I also have a iPhone 6, I can currently upgrade but my 6 is still doing fine for my needs. Personally I'll wait till the next generation iPhone SE gets released, then I'll decide whether I'm going next gen SE or 7.

Your friends wont respect you and will probably look down on you if you don't have the latest iPhone. Especially if they are Applers as well. Go for the 7 and be the envy of your friends.

/sarcasm off

OP, prepare yourself, you are going to be getting a lot of hate.
there is a subsection on this forum that are against upgrading,
then there is this super Vocal group of apple users that will spend weeks in a thread trying to convince you to stay with apple.

if you need to upgrade, you need to upgrade, nothing wrong with that.

the best options as they are available on contracts in South Africa are:

HTC 10 (if you can find stock, doubt you will though)
S7 and the Edge, highest ranking phone that is available on contract.
P9, second highest rated Android that is available.

the rest all have little quirks, that you need to do personal reviews on to make sure you are willing to live with them.
the LG G5 and Huawei Honor 8 are both good, but you will need to watch a few reviews to see if you can live with them.

waiting for the LG V20 is also a definite option.

if you are upgrading because you need to renew your actual contract, and the phone you get with it is simply an added bonus like it seems, then do not think about the 6s or the LG g4.
both are good phones, and can punch it up whit the phones mentioned above, but why go for a year old phone, a year from now the phones will not be getting upgrades anymore.

I've noticed the 'haters' and it doesn't bother me much,

My current phone is working fine, except for Siri not working, but its not something I'm fussy about.
The only real benefit I'll get from upgrading is that I get a new handset and I my wife can use this one as hers is giving problems. But we not pressed for time, so I'm happy waiting for a handset that catches my eye.

I have a colleague with the P9, so I handled that one already and it comes in at a good price also.
I read a review of the Note 7 though, and its such a shame about the battery issues, I liked what I read.
I think I'll try and get my hands on a S7 Edge and see what it feels like . . .

And I will read up on the LG V20,

Thanks a lot

If the S-pen isn't a deal breaker for you, the S7 (Edge) will probably check all the boxes.
