So it something that I've been thinking of for a while now.

And I don't really know what would be the better option.
I've never really been into console gaming - enjoyed PS2 very much, but that was only ever playing in friends stuff.

Ever since my 1st 286, PC gaming has been my personal choice.

But now with the XBox360 on the shelves, consoles have caught up.

I'm obviously faced with a financial dilemma.

R4k on a 8800GT or similar or somewhere in the same region for an XBox360.

I plan on making the move to the UK in June of this year (2 year Holidaymaker visa), so I'm also considering what would be the better component to hold its value; that being the upgrade to the PC, or the console?
This being taken into consideration because I would have to sell my PC or Xbox360 or both, seeing that I can't take them with me :o

The nice thing about getting the console is that I can try it out on my new 32inch (sorry boys couldn't afford the more macho sizes :p ) Samsung LCD TV.
The down side is - console games are pricey - seeing that I've hardly ever a *cough* purchased PC games *cough* its just something that jumps out and bugs me :p

I really want to get into COD4, Crysis and the like (but isn't Crysis PC only?) anyway - you know... the higher end games.

So for those of you have both formats... Which do you think is the better option for me here?

Currently running on Nvidia Geforce 7100GS 512mb on a P4 3.40ghz Pentium processor with 1gig RAM

R4K for an 8800GT??? No ways. They shouldn't be more than R3,000. I'm selling my 1-day old 640Mhz 8800GT for R2,500, to get one in a different colour
:D

Xbox definitely. Haven't spent a cent in upgrading my PC since Oct 06 (when I got the xbox :). Rather get yourself a new PC on the other side. That said, with the rumoured xbox ultimate coming out in 2008, you might as well get the xbox there too :D The games , if purchased new, is expensive. Hop over to the local xbox forums and pick them up for a lot less. Why can't you take the xbox with ???

Took the money i had for a new 8800gt - blew it all on an xbox and some games ;p
i dont think i regret it... after all xbox is a bit more social neway and i just love the controllers... time to give pc a break for a bit...

I would get the xbox if it wasnt for one thing.... no mouse!
I have tried playing FPS on the PS2 and the xbox360 and they suck so much with a controller. I finished BF2 on the PS2 so I gave it a fair chance but I think I will steer clear of consoles for a while still.

The Xbox 360 Ultimate, Stuff writes, will be hitting store shelves by this autumn and feature "1080p HDMI output, built-in Wi-Fi, hi-def audio output, cooler 65nm hardware architecture and a near-silent fan." On top of all that, the IPTV service that MS touted at last year's CES will be good to go.

Also included in the Ultimate, according to Stuff? A 320GB hard drive and HD-DVD drive. While we have our doubts about the authenticity of the details, the news seems a bit too matter of fact to ring false. Is someone at Stuff simply letting the cat out of the bag early? Perhaps we'll know more this Sunday, when we report directly from CES '08.

They're getting like PC's now ... different versions and specs. The thing I like about my PS2, is it was the same as my neighbours and everyone else. Now some Xbox and PS3 are better than others ... urgh

I seriously doubt the Xbox ultimate is true, more like a wish list than anything.

Back to the main question
The console will hold it's value better, Crysis isn't on any console and the games can be bought for cheap second hand from forums and gaming stores.

I used to be a hardcore PC gamer and ever since I got my first Xbox I haven't looked back. I don't think my PC could even load the welcome screen to Crysis now ;)

Xbox definitely. I've given up on upgrading my pc. With the Xbox you know all the games will work like it's supposed to, no tweaking of graphics to make it run smooth. All you really get used to the controller instead of the mouse and keyboard very quickly.

I just think that customs will look at it and deport my a$$ back cos it looks like I'm going to make a permanent stay of it :p
I suppose I could ship it over
Any suggestions on that front?

Aha - that does sound a bit freaky - I don't recall ever having played FPS games on consoles - it was all NFS or car games or... I don't recall. But FPS  for some reason I don't think I crossed that bridge...eish.

How are you guys enjoying playing COD4 on Xbox?

I think I'm gonna do some investigation into the pricing of the console and see if it peaks my interest some more.

Some of the points raised by all does kinda ring true - all the tweaking and upgrading that needs to be done - I suppose I could let the PC have a break and rather spend the cash on the Xbox - at least then I'll have a portable means of playing my fav games :o

My friend has been egging me on to leave or rather sell my PC to him when I leave - not that he has any use for it, just so that he can have one in the home for his kids. So I've got the sale of the PC pretty much down I reckon...

If you all know of any good deals in stores for the console, please drop a line in here - much obliged tia :)

I don't see a prob with taking the xbox in a rucksack if you have too :) When everyone else takes out their laptops at the airport scanners, you just whip the xbox out. I did it prior to a flight to Durban a while back :D

LoL :D But that was a local flight I assume - all that I've heard over the years is that the customs officials at Heathrow are like the flipping Gestapo or other form of Commies :o
They'll look for any reason to send you packing...

So whats it to be then?
The pro, mongoose or elite?

I've seen the specs for the pro and mongoose, not the elite as yet.
But from what I gather the Elite's HDD is bigger and less noise comes out of it.

I'd certainly want to make use of the HDMI as my Samsung 32icnh LCD does support the feature.

But whats with the HDD space anyway?
In my mind - I just wanna play right
And why is that consoles from yonder years till today - only come with one controller?

I thought HDD was a large feature ... was a little upset I had 'only' 20GB, but in reality I do nothing on it :/ Downloaded one or two demos and have saved games. I still have over 10GB free ...

True hey - I don't see myself using the console for downloading anything really, bandwidth is hard enough to come by as it is :p

Do you use your PC for things besides Gaming?

If you do the pc would be the better choice. I for one like being able to watch movies, work, browse the net and play games without moving from my comfy high back chair.

It also seems as though you like fps games. The pc is the better choice there.

Whenever I've ventured into console gaming it usually ends up just gathering up in a while because if I'm already in front of my pc doing other stuff, why would I want to move?
