I also had an upgrade recently and decided to rather get a HSDPA phone. In my case, the SAMSUNG U700. I've been using it with my prepaid databundle and it works like a dream, connection speed is gr8 - provided that vodacom's 3G/HSDPA network for prepaid bundle users are stable .... ( i believe that you are aware of the problems the prepaid bundle users have been experiencing )
So my opinion is to get a new phone with HSDPA capabilities. I think the best phone on the market is the Nokia N95, but it was a bit pricy for me. .. For the N95 I had to pay in an extra R3000.00 ..... THATS INSANE ..... hence the U700

I ran my pre-paid SIM through my phone for a while, but I got tired of swapping SIMs all the time. I ended up buying a Option GT Max, which I am really happy with. You can read my feedback on the card here.

One thing that is starting to happen is some of the new notebooks are dropping the PCMCIA slot in favour of the PC Express slot. You may want to keep that in mind. My Dell D820 came with both :)

Phone or modem, it depends on a lot of things...your budget and usage for instance. If you don't mind forking out an additional R2K for your modem on lower usage packages (or cash), then go for a modem - I would think it is more convenient.

I've always reasoned that while you can modem with your cellphone, you can't talk with/through your modem, but with VOIP I am not so sure anymore.

I see it as a factor of the amount of usage.

If you're an occasional data user, use your phone.

If you're going to be on-line for any length of time, (say more than a hour per day) get a data card.

I am using my HTC TyTN as HSDPA modem ... works like a dream (at home and at office) ... now I can easily bypass blocked sites (read gmail not pr0n) :D

What speeds are you getting with your HTC??

On 74% signal strength (very bad reception in the office), and connected via bluetooth to my MacBook Pro, I get between 400 and 600 kb/s according to Vodacom's speedtest (Was downloading from international sites this morning at about 60KB/s)

well i didnt really get a choice ... hehehe ... the lady at the voda shop said i have a data contract , and can only take a modem. no issue though ... the modem works fine , and im happy with my speeds.

one question. (hope this hasnt been asked a million times) : is it possible to tel your modem/software to only use a certain network? and not jump between them. for eg. if there is only gprs available , i dont even want to know about it ... just tell me no 3g signal.
