Hey,

I've got an E2160 overclocked to 3.1GHz, and I want to get a HD4850 as an upgrade from my 8500gt.

Q - should I get an E8400 as well, will the E2160 hold me back in the latest games?

Thanks.

Hi dudewotevr

The E2160 should serve you well, though the E8400 might be a better choice (larger cache, Core architecture, FSB speed, etc). Also make sure that your motherboard supports 45nm CPUs before even considering upgrading to it. So my advice would be: If you can afford it, yes. If you can't, don't worry too much about it.

Thanks Techie!

So my E2160 won't bottleneck the 4850?

If not, then what kind of difference would the E8400 make, cos I can afford one. (haven't upgraded in a while)

Would it give me extra fps?

I doubt if it'll be much of a bottleneck as such, but you can definitely expect improved performance with the E8400 (probably to the tune of at least 5FPS - 10FPS, maybe more, though this number is just a shot in the dark).

And the E8400 can always be overclocked as well ;)

I say just stick with what you have till Nehalem becomes affordable for you.

I'm waiting for some final benchmarks to determine whether the jump to Nehalem will be worth it with regards to gaming. I cannot see their first CPUs (even the baby 2.66GHz quad core) selling for less than R3,000 each so I reserve judgment until I see their final performance figures. :o

Intel plans to launch three Nehalem generation, Bloomfield CPUs. The fastest and the most expensive Core i7 at 3.2GHz and QPI at 6.4 with brand to be disclosed will cost a saucy $999. This is still good if you have in mind that Core 2 Quad QX9775 had a wholesale price of astronomic $1499 and QX9770 was selling for $1399.

The CPU launches in Q4 most likely in first weeks of November. This is the only Extreme Edition Nehalem planned for 2008.

The runner up is clocked at 2.93 and has QPI at 4.8 and 8MB cache will be selling for $562 wholesale price. It will end up just slightly more expensive than Q9650 Core 2 Quad at 3.0GHz that currently sells for $530.

The slowest Nehelem, Bloomfield generation works at 2.66GHz and has the same QPI at 4.8 and 8MB cache will sell for $284. This is an awesome price for a great piece of technology and they will all launch at the same time.

Let’s just hope that there won’t be any shortages.

These new intel cpu's are going to kill anything out now, i'm to lazy to go look but i saw they could be as much as 20-30% faster, thats the smallest one.

If you going to upgrade to an e8400 you might as well upgrade to a q6600 for a couple hundred more.

The e8400 will kill your 2160 at 3.1ghz, you can overclock the e8400 to 4.0ghz on air. If you have money upgrade i say because as techie says nehalem won't come cheap.

I assume you're talking about this article. ;)

I'm still hesitant to recommend a quad core for hardcore gamers as most want the most FPS they can get now, not in future games.

EDIT: But a 2.4GHz quad core happily running at 3GHz on stock cooling is a sight to behold ;)

Well all i know if my system boots and runs alot better on my q6600 than it did on my e8400 @ 4.1ghz.

So maybe games won't notice a difference but alot of people use their pc's for more than gaming in which case a quadcore has a noticeable gain. Considering its about 100 bucks more than the e8400 makes no sense to wonder for a 100 bucks :p

you should try a q6600 running at 3.6ghz on water :), now thats a sight i love to see every morning.

I agree, I'm also very happy with my quad core but I know a few gamers who won't touch one until all four cores are being used by most of the games, hence my use of "hardcore gamers" :D
