Upgrade recommendations

I will be using the PC for internet, email, media and thats it. I have already bought a G31 mobo 2x 2Gb DDR2 800 and a 500Gb HHD.

Surely 4Gb memory should be enough? I intend getting a GPU before putting everything together.

Which GPU should I be looking at (either ATI or Geforce) to stream HD content to my TV? And would I be able to view both the tv & monitor screens at the same time?

4GB RAM is plenty.

ATI will give better bang for buck be it low end, mid range or high end stuff. You could probably get a cheap ATI HD4350 512MB @ ±R450 which has VGA, DVI and HDMI outs. The 1GB version @ ±R600 would probably be better for running dual screens.

Definitely a new PC.
I think I should maybe also consider an upgrade.

1GB just for dual screens? I assume you mean for gaming with frame buffers, texture maps, etc, etc, etc. For regular day-to-day work you won't need that much so just get the cheaper unit.

You can sell that old pc for r1500-ish. Then put that money into a new pc. But it is definitely time to overhaul, don't bother upgrading what you have. If you can supply a budget we can suggest how you can maximize the new pc.

I will be keeping my old PC as is and build up a new one. I have already purchased a G31 mobo, 500GB HHD & 2x 2Gb DDR800 memory. I just need to decide on the chip.

For graphics I will have a look at the HD4350 512Mb or 1Gb. I am looking at something like a CoolerMaster Elite 330 Case with power supply for about R500. http://www.coolermaster.com/product.php?category_id=19&product_id=30

Any other suggestions would be great.

I figured it may help with dual monitors (higher resolution).

To add to the G31 mobo, 500GB HHD & 2x 2Gb DDR800 memory I have bought I was thinking of getting:

CPU: Core 2 Duo E7500 2.93Ghz, E7600 3.06Ghz or Core 2 Quad Q8300 2.5Ghz
GPU: Sapphire HD 4650 1Gb DDR2
PSU: Vantec ioN2 460w
Case: CoolerMaster Elite 330
DVD-RW: Samsung SATA 22x DVD-RW Lightscribe

I just need to decide on the CPU. I am leaning towards the E7600 though.

Should I get everything before Xmas or wait until early January?

I would look out for x-mas specials.

CPU wise I would get a quad core.

ESQ

Click on the different branches as they all have different CPU's on sale.
MyBB members can buy directly from them as they have a special account setup for us I think.

I have decided to go with the E7600 3.06Ghz cpu, Asus HD4650 1Gb DDR2 gpu, Gigabyte 470W psu all in a CoolerMaster Elite 334 or 330 case. I will order all of the above next week. I already have a Biostar G31 Mobo, 2x 2Gb DDR2 800Hz memory and a 500Gb Sata HHD.

Any changes I should make? I am also want to get a TV tuner card to record from dstv.

Looks good, that PSU is actually overkill for a 4650 but I'm gonna PM you about a graphics card.

I dont think the PSU is overkill. Looks like a decent setup - I suppose you can't plump for a 4850 by any chance? it would be worth it.

For what I will be using the PC, the 4650 is overkill.

Any advice on a pvr-type tv tuner card?

I will be buying the cpu, psu, gpu from crown technologies. Any problems experienced with availability or deliveries from them?
