Upgrade time looms

who needs Vista?

Show me one thing, just one that I cannot do with XP or Linux.

DX 10 :P

but, hehe theres the nice hardware upgrade to have the software beast run smoothly if you don't have a fast enough rig what is one of those things...

Vista has a shiny new coat of paint, a dark grey - officially called "slate" - colour scheme. But if you're running an older machine, it may not look quite as pretty, as the system scales its effects depending on how well endowed your PC is.

Umkay, so what do they mean about that

The bigger the PC the better the preformance? I always thought is the motion of the ocean!

The niftier aspects of the new user interface get turned off if you don't have a fairly high-end machine (depends on amt of memory, graphics card etc). There is a Microsoft tool that does an audit of your machine and tells you if it is `vista ready'.

I will install Vista in about 1-2 years when I have enough money to upgrade my machine. Also my linux looks better and runs faster than Vista atm so I will only upgrade for the DX10 games. Or maybe I will just buy a console.

Do I need the power of Vista at a big pricetag, or is Linux + OpenOffice sufficient?

In our offices we are making the transition to OpenOffice - with the intent to go Linux on workstations as well exept those who can't go without some kind of specialised MS app.

The cost of Vista - hard and software - is simply placing it beyond cost efficiency.

99% of all the work in our office does not warrant MS-Vista.

Im already on Vista Ultimate.. Build 6000 :/ 20 days now ;D

Just gonna put a retail key in January 30th when it comes out, the current licence I have is valid until May.

So... Show me one thing, just one hat I cannot do with Windows 98.

Its a natural upgrade.

Vista as it currently is, is what XP should have been. I am slowly but shurely fazing XP out as I am dual booting at the moment, and my machine is now 3 years old, and it runs smooothly.

Zero interest in Vista. Just bought a Xbox 360 so there goes any incentive I might have had to upgrade my computer.

I wonder how many Vista upgrades are not going to happen because people buy the XBox, Wii, or PS3?

Who bought their computer just for games?

I will be going Vista on my laptop. Fully compatible and fully loaded :D

I wanna get a piece of that Aero man ;)

so? if u use vista will it be compatible with all games and software apps that ran on win xp?

MS have a nice little utility available that you can run on your current installation which will then come back with results to inform you whether you can safely upgrade to Vista or not.
The results will indicate whether, firstly your machine can handle Vista and what version will be best for you, and further indicating what apps will not work, i.e. must be uninstalled before installing Vista and what apps will require attention, or may have minor compatibility problems, like going to the vendor, etc.

What this means, is that if you have the apps on your pc at the time the utlity is checking your system, the results will indicate if the specific app is ok or not.

Vista has native 64 bit processing. So if you are using hardware features (like heavy graphics processing) which require this or want to get the best performance out of a new computer then you need Vista.

For the average user I wouldn't suggest getting Vista until service pack 1 has been released.

Of course Linux has been supporting 64 processing for years. But then it is Linux....
