The way understand it, is that on the 1st August I will switch on my pc to possibly double the speed I have now without me having to do a thing. Am I correct or being wishful thinking. ;)

Wishfull thinking.. i think thise "Upgrade" procedure is going to be a process.. Or a pushed one.. (the pushed one = You calling telkom daily to get it done properly)..

So yeah, i'm leaning more to manual > vs Automatic

I upgraded last month to make sure I get the benefit from 1 August. It only took them a day to change the setting pretty good for Telscum

depending on is your exchange supports it, which it most propably will, yes you are correct. it may not happen as you switch your computer on though. reseting your adsl modem/router first may be needed

Its definitally wishfull thinking that youll wake up one day and ur line will have been upgraded automatically. Telkom is going to start moving clients over to 384 from 192 depending on the exchange and whether or not they can actually handle the speed. Its an automatic change ova but i reckon most people are going to have to either wait or nag till its done. But according to Telkom its automatic, whether u want it done ASAP is another issue tho.

I got my 192k line installed yesterday (waited 14 weeks!). I was told that my exchange does not support anything faster, leading to me settling witha lousy 192 line.

Now with regards to 1 Aug, i spoke to someone from Telkom. As albert123 said, if your exchange supports it should happen within the next 1-2 months. If your exchange doesn't support it like mine, you will just have to wait unitl a tech team comes out to your exchange and upgrades it - which could take, i quote, "up to a year".

Does it look like i have a year to wait?

This is the difference between 192k and 384k, these are still very low speeds and not as large as the difference between 192k and 1mbps. Their excuse about the exchange being too far away when dealing with such low speeds is utter crap.

In addition, the 192k package came out after 512k and 384k so why would they only enable it for 192k and limit their subscribers options (and from Telkom's point of view, more money).

hehe, well to be sure, i got my line upgraded the other day, enjoying the speeds :)

This isnt entirely on topic, but I also phoned to upgrade this month because I didnt want to be told in august that my exchange wont support it.

When I phoned, sure enough I was told I am to far away from the exchange. I told them that was strange because I used to enjoy speeds close to what a 384 line is supposed to support. The agent said oh ok in that case it will take 6 to 8 weeks to do the upgrade (I must admit I was rather pleased at Telkom's response to logic and reason.)

Anyway I of course decided to wait and see what would happen and then forgot about it. Then about a week ago my dog bumped the modem plug and I had to reset it after plugging it back in and what do you know, I'm now getting 40KBps downloads. For all I know I couldve been upgraded the day after I phoned. Undoubtedly Ill be charged for the whole month.

My advice is upgrade now just to make sure they dont nail you with excuses later. And if you dont start resetting your modem everyday from the 1st of august just in case.

Upgraded as well to 384k. All working A-ok after about a 7 day wait. :)
The telkom agent assured me that as from 1/8 the price would be reduced.

I think it's automatic. When I signed up for ADSL the person helping me said "it doesn't matter if you tick 192 or 384 because you will get upgraded anyways"

So the canning of the 192kbps and upgrade to 384kbps HomeDSL and unbelievable R25 price reduction is really happening/official ?

I live under a rock so please bear with my ignorance, and I have come to expect worse from telkom (yet they never cease to appall me).

Possibly, as for the exchange, it prob doesnt need to be upgraded just moved closer to you ;p
when u cant get a faster speed its because you are 2 far away from the exchange..

lol ja as far as i know also there nothing they can really "upgrade", they have to move you closer or build another one inbetween or something. so "either you have it, or you dont"
