Have been ADSL user for some time with DSL "Fastest" (4 Mbps) ADSL access at R425 pm & Do Uncapped Advanced (up to 4 Mbps) telkom internet service (R286 pm).

But upload speeds just too slow so have upgraded to VDSL elite 20 Mbps line at R499 pm. Have bought VDSL router, got the call to say VDSL line operating, installed router.

To my question. On advice (2x) of telkom staff I have not changed my Do Uncapped Advanced (up to 4 Mbps) telkom internet service because they said it will now run at higher line speed (up to 20Mbps). But of course it doesn't! Speed test show just under 4 Mbps down and about 0.7 mbps up - just like it was before the line upgrade. Looking at their data/Internet offerings I expected to have to upgrade the Do Uncapped Advanced up to 4 Mbps service to the more expensive (obviously) Do Uncapped Elite up to 20 mbps service for R1099 pm.

Am I right that I should have done this to be able to take advantage of the 20mbps VDSL line access I now have, or, are the telkom people that say I should be able to get the faster download and upload speeds using the old Do Uncapped Advanced (up to 4 Mbps)? The latter just doesn't seem to make sense. Or am I missing something? Oh and also could I upgrade the Do Uncapped Advanced (up to 4 Mbps) to the do elite soft cap with 50gig data and get the full advantage of the VDSL line?

I stand to correction but I do not see them limiting your upload speed on the 4Mbit uncapped account so you should get closer to 2Mbit if you are on actual VDSL.

Log into your router and check the sync speeds also make sure you are on 20Mbit VDSL as opposed to 20Mbit ADSL 2+ as the difference between those two services is 1Mbit upload on ADSL 2+ vs 2Mbit upload on VDSL.

If you want to download at 20Mbit on your new 20Mbit line you will need an account which will support the 20Mbit speeds, so change to a 20Mbit uncapped which is crazy expensive. Alternatively just get a capped account for the right amount from a different ISP such as WebAfrica, Afrihost, Vox etc. If you tell us what exactly you use your internet for we could possibly help you pick an ISP which is best suited for your needs.

I personally would not fork out R1.1K just for a 20Mbit Telkom uncapepd account.

Thanks for the reply. Your third paragraph is the issue - ie. needing and account that will support the 20Mbps line speed. And in fact I've already jumped ship from Telkom (mainly because for two days I couldn't get thru once on 10210 after waiting 30 minutes each time & they simply don't call you back when you request that on the web - whereas MWEB got back to me in just over an hour) to MWeb who i already have another account with. The really competent person on the end of the MWeb telephone line advised me and had me converted to a 50GB Capped account (for a lot less money)within ten minutes! It really is that simple!

So now a speedtest reveals I'm connected at 18Mbps+ download but, since this was my main objective, the upload speed has barely increased and never gets above 0.85Mbps! Nowhere near the 2Mbit you suggest I should be getting.

On your advice I need to log into the router and do the check you suggest. But will only do this at the weekend as said connection is at my place in JHB and I will only get back there coming weekend. Will report back then (Could that be the problem iro the upload speed if I'm getting the faster download speed? )

Thanks again for your assistance

Ditch Telkom as your ISP. They're absolutely useless.

Get a capped data account from WebAfrica or CrystalWeb. Uncapped 20Mbps is just too expensive at present, unless of course you don't mind paying it.

18Mbit download on Speedtest is pretty decent, however you should be getting 2Mbit upload or very close to it if you are on VDSL.

Best bet would be to log into your router and take a look, only way to know for sure what is happening. Then check to see if you are on ADSL 2+ or VDSL, as the maximum upload speed for ADSL 2+ is 1Mbit.

Back in JHB and I've logged into the router and it was on an ADSL setting. When I try and change that to a "pure" vdsl setting it will not connect at all (the list of options are)
ADSL-autodetect modulation.scehdule M
ADSL autodetect modulation
G992.5 (ADSL2+ 24M/1M
G992.3 (ADSL2 12M.3.5M)
T1.413 (ADLS 8M/1M)
G992.1 (ADSL.G.DMT *m/1M)
G992.2 (ADSL Glite 1.5M/0.5M)
ADSL mode/VDSL mode
VDSL

If however I set it on "ADSL mode/vdsl mode" then it does connect but after a speedtest it still only does 17.42 down and 0.86 up and not the 1mbps or 2 mbps that I'm told it should do. Are there any other settings i need to change on the PACE router with the pure "VDSL" setting referred to above?

If it is set to ADSL then you need to call Telkom and ask them to move you over to a 20Mbit VDSL profile.
