Hi All

I have just upgraded my adsl from shaped to unshaped, in the hope of achieving better speeds with both P2P and better quality on SIP/VoIP with our servers hosted overseas.

I dont notice any difference - P2P download seems shaped, however I have not tried the VoIP as yet, what tests are there to check?

I expected a drop in latency quite honestly but saw no change.

Typical Telscum? Or Am I missing something?

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

the doc!,
I have just tested VOIP on an unshaped account, and the difference in voice quality was quite astounding! I made calls to mobile, landlines and P2P (free) in Europe and I must say if it was not for the price I would convert tomorrow.

I don't do gaming, and did not see any real difference in speed whilst surfing internationally.

Unshaped VoIP

I have an unshaped account mainly due to VoIP and the difference in quality is amazing. Overseas phone call are like next door whereas before (shaped) it was sometimes not possible to understand the other side - though they had never problems hearing me. You can test and compare the quality at: http://www.testyourvoip.com/

@the doc!

I presume the score of 1.0 was on the unshaped account? I'm also considering upgrading to a unshaped account for VOIP but if your experience is the norm, then it's completely pointless. I wonder if there is a way to check that an account is really unshaped and not just billed as such?

Here's a posting in another thread about the same issue: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=29326&page=5

mystic, roger that, it was with the unshaped account...

Not happy

How do you know it is actualy unshaped? Its highly possible somebody messed up the settings, especialy when Telkom is involved.

OK it seems they have given me another shaped account, instead of the unshaped I asked for, how do I know?? I got this mail from them now -

Should you reach the 3.00GB cap on the combined total, you will be redirected to a throttled international service.

Isnt unshaped supposed to have a 4gb Cap??

SAIX Unshaped accounts are really much better than the unshaped. You shouldn't be having these problems.
If you could paste your IP address here, or if you dont feel like sharing that, then paste your exchange's IP (Gateway IP). This will allow us to determine whether you're on the unshaped/shaped IP range...

Hi Fragtion, please explain how you would be able to test for shaping using the machine or gateway IP?

OK - I have contacted my local telkom CSB followed up with an e-mail and they have agreed that they made a mistake by giving me another shaped account instead of an unshaped account!!!

I beleive they are to sort it out in the next 15 minutes, will keep you posted.

Problem sorted - I am surprised at the difference!! Unshaped is the way to go, makes the shaped accounts look unusable!!

Also IP is similar, what changes on the unshaped is that the username becomes *****@dsl512us.telkomsa.net (they add the "us" there)

mystic score is between 4.1 and 4.4 awesome!!

Any idea what the improvements of an unshaped account will be wrt. online gaming?
I play strategy games like AOE3 and found it very laggy playing with overseas players on my shaped ADSL account.

Kuifie

I have noticed big, BIG improvements on RDP, VoIP etc, I can only assume that this would be the answer, its a shame it comes down to this, normal ISP's dont shape bandwidth, specially if its on a CAP.

Had the same problem with Axxess - I was for the first two days of the month still on a shaped account before adding 'africa' to the axxess user name. Since that time the score at the VoIP test is always above 4.

Can you post what the username looks like after the @ so people with similar issues in the future can have a reference point.

Cheers
