Upgraded line - NOT blown away...

OK, 384 to 512k is not huge but I am a bit disappointed by speedtest.net results: download 307kbps, upload 147kbps.

What I would like to know is: did I have unreasonable expectations? What are some of the guys getting on their 512k lines?
 
Somethings up with your line, you should be getting around 450kbps or more.

What were your results like on the 384kbps connection?

If you download a file, what download rate do you get on your current line?

That's more or less what I was expecting.

I only ran a few tests back then: 177 - 277kbps.

I received a notification email at 23:54 last night, only saw it this morning and did not get a change to download any files. I managed to only do the test before I left for work. Will download tonight and post results.
 
Upgrading to 512kb/s simply makes no financial sense when compared to the 4Mb/s+ service.
 
upload speed help with voip and gaming over 384.

my 512kps normally about 0.50mps+ and 0.19mps+

real speed, 52kps nntp and http a bit faster 60kbs+

What are your SNR and Att numbers?

Some areas don't even have 4mb/s as an option, and 512kb/s is the max.

I get between 50-55 kB/s on mine. I wouldn't regard a speedtest.net test as gospel though, it's best to try with a few downloads, using a download manager.

Many people, myself included, either don't have 4 mb/s supported in their area or stay too far from the exchange for it. Apart from that, the cost of a 4 mb/s uncapped account is much more than a 512 kb/s one.

True! I won't be going anywhere near those-so-called-uncapped accounts until I meet a person who's truly happy with them. I was chatting to a colleague earlier... he recently cancelled MWEB's 4096 kbps... So ja, I will be on 512k for a while. :)

If that is the case then I would stick to 384kb/s, the speed improvement you get for the money you pay is not worth it imho but that's just me.

Not an option as I sometimes works from home, and the 128 kb/s upload speed on the 384 package makes it unusable for work purposes.
 
In the past 3 months I've gone from 384 to 512 to 4096 and back down to 384.:wtf:

The jump up to 512 was quite nice. It should be the entry level speed.
4096 was uber nice. I also thought that the monthly cost was not much of a difference from 512 but I also use my telephone so paying Telkom over R700 and then my ISP over R500 didn't make much sense. So now I'm back to R500 for the whole package.
But boy, did I enjoy the fast speed.
Internet is a necessity, 4meg line is a luxury.
