Upgrading 10 year old i5 750!

Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone could assist me - I am looking to upgrade my i5 750 Quad Core, 8GB DDR3 Ram and Radeon 128bit graphics card.

I have been looking at getting the AMD Ryzen 5 3600 but unsure what board to pair it with. I've seen some good deals on MSI but was wondering if I should opt for Asus or Gigabyte instead?

Please advise - I am based in Durban and my budget is around R8500 for board, chip and RAM. I am not sure i would require a graphics card for the 3600.

Any help would be appreciated.

My uses are basic - some high res Photoshop, basic video editing and email and stuff. Nothing major and my i5 still handles these.
 
There's nothing wrong with Msi, you are using such a relic of a pc you should just get an APU AMD system
You'd need a dedicated display adapter with the most Amd processors today so research an APU cpu , you can dabble a little in gaming and enough power for office activities! and it won't leave you broke.
 
Sadly R8500 isn't going to get you a lot at the moment.

You don't sound like the type that would ever overclock etc so let's go with this,

R3999 - AMD Ryzen 5 3600
R1566 - Gigabyte A520M DS3H AMD AM4 Socket
R1749 - TeamGroup T-Force Dark Zα (For AMD) 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4-3200MHz
R7314 - TOTAL

There's a cheaper version of that MB but it only has 2 ram slots hampering future memory upgrades so I picked the above one.

The 3600 will require a GPU but you can continue using your existing one. Should you wish in future to start gaming etc you can simply add a new GPU to an already decent base.

Well it may have taken ages for monitor to arrive, it was still 3k cheaper then anyone else, also that was the cheaper kit with RAM and motherboard and CPU.

I would also always choose ASUS where possible, but I have no issue with MSI and Gigabyte stuff.

ASUS stuff tends to last forever, but everything MSI and Gigabyte I've owned has lasted me at least 5 years, and in most cases close to 10.

I've not had any issues on most brands, each have had good and bad.

As far as I'm concerned, if the component lasts for at least 5 years, that's a pretty good run.

Brands I've personally had issues with in the past are Biostar, XFX and Inno3D, Galax(y) and Colorful.

That said, I did recently get a brand new MSI motherboard from Loot that was DOA, and a second one that was filthy. Don't know how I forgot about that.
 
Consider 2nd hand?

Always best to let someone else take that initial hit on depreciation, especially if you don't specifically require top end.

I do get the desire to want something new tho

Asus is no better than any other brand, some Asus motherboards have vrm issues. Then there's the support structures, Asus used to be via partserve which you want to avoid, dunno if it's still the case.

I built the following for the fiancée:

Ryzen 5 3400G
MSI B450M Mortar Max
2x 8GB 3200Mhz GSkill Ripjaw
Mushkin 250GB m.2
1TB Seagate SSD (sata)
A Corsair H60 cooler with a Noctua 120mm fan and ThermalGrizzly Kryonaut thermal paste
Coolermaster 3 pack aRGB Fans for the pretty lights
650W superflower Power Supply
Case is a Thermaltake H18 I think it’s called.

She uses it for her studies and for the MS Office suite. Also does light gaming on it, without any issues. I tried MSFS, and while it was a rough experience (10-15fps) it ran perfectly stable.

When I decide to upgrade my rig, I can plop my 3600X and XFX Thicc III into it, and i know it will work extremely well for her needs. So you’d potentially have a decent upgrade path with that board and Ram.

IIRC, all in I paid just under R10k for the entire system, excluding screen and peripherals. Also had a bluetooth and wireless usb dongle lying around so account for that too.

I used Wootware as they are about 600m down the road from me.
