Hi All;

Im trying to figure out if its safe and worthwhile ugrading my HDD firmware;
(if it aint broke dont fix it...and all that jazz)

anything I should look out for? any horror stories people have when they carry out this?

firmware upgrade Im trying to carry out is the grenadaBP upgrade from seagate;
on my 2TB drive and as I have 2 of these drives will they work for both?

the disclaimer is quite scary sounding......

This firmware only supports the following Barracuda SATA (GrenadaBP) models:

ST2000DM001 1CH164

This utility will upgrade the firmware on your Seagate disk drive if the drive model and the current firmware are compatible with this update.

In the case of hard drives rule is different:

- Upgrade only if firmware is still fully functional.
- If drive is already experiencing firmware related problems you should stabilize it first.

Backup first before upgrade - in every situation.

Yes fully working, and only reason i think its worth doing is to maybe gain a bit of speed from it

No, speed will not improve. They are fixing known bugs which can potentially or statistically affect some users. Speed can improve only if hard drive is already experiencing problems and you erase entire surface to fix it. To find out whether you have problems read SMART report and scan disk for delays.

Can you tell me what the model number of your HDD is please?

Risky as hell, visit the SG website and see exactly whats different about the new and current FW, then make your choice.

I wouldn't with a hdd. Just back up and forget.

Exactly I'm very worried it kill my movies and games drives,
If it ain't broke don't fix it as they say,

Difference is my firmware is from 2011 and this updated is from 2013,
Anybody here ever tried it before?
Seems i have to do it via USB before win loads,
Seems risky, but sure somebody here done it before?

If it was me, id copy everything first to another hard drive then not give a damn what happens to the drive should the firmware brick it.
