I want to upgrade my Telkom DSL line and from what I have gathered I have to call 10210 to upgrade but what I want to know is what details I will need in order to upgrade. I don't want to wait on hold for half an hour just to find out I don't know something and have to call back later.

Also I know it differs for many people but how long would it be before the upgrade takes effect. I live 500m from the exchange and the maximum my line can handle is 20 Mbps. All I want is to upgrade from 2 Mbps to 10 Mbps. Would it take a long time? Is the process physical or can it be done remotely?

The process is not complicated. Just dial in to the call centre and when you get to speak to someone eventually, just tell them you want to upgrade your dsl line. Usually they will ask you a couple of questions, ex what is your landline number, ID number, etc, obviously you must the owner of the line, and then they will ask you to what speed you want to upgrade and then you just tell them up to 10mb (ADSL FASTEST). They will then proceed to give you a reference number to which the upgrade should be done within a day or 2 after the request. i will just restart my router every now and then to see if the ugprade has been completed.

My experience has been that sometimes the call center can upgrade the line immediately while they are actually speaking to you on the phone. By the time you put the phone down your line will be upgraded already.

Sometimes they have to move your line to another port or exchange, then it can take a few days for a techie to go out. If your port and exchange support the faster line then the change is done within a couple hours.

Hi 500m will support 40mb and if you see the price from 10-20 well the price difference is less than R100.00 so check out 20mb, it is just a dslam configuration and when the configuration is changed the dslam automatically drops the sync and re syncs at the new speed, i can not understand why this still cannot be done live, this really boggles my brain....

Because VDSL operates on an ISAM or MSAN and not a DSLAM, so there's a port swap required if there are available ports and will only be done if the backhaul capacity can cater for the connection without congesting the link...

Would I need to give them details like my Telkom username and password?

Also if I upgrade today will I be charged pro rata?

yes you will get charged pro rata, depending on your billing cycle, but they will/should tell you this.

Just call them and see :)

Sounds good. What speed do you have now and what are you upgrading to?

4mb going to 10mb. Looking forward to it as I stream a lot.

I am concerned cause CW checked and said that the telkom systems show that my exchange max is 4mb.

I am praying that telkom lady wasn't screwing me around

Hopefully for your sake it's just a discrepancy between the wholesale system and Telkom's internal systems.

Hopefully for the sake of accuracy it's correct...:p

You jinxed me! Tech called and asked if I still have a problem, i said no it's all good. Hang up the phone and the line goes dead 10 minutes later. Odd thing is that it went dead yesterday about the same time.

Called the tech back and he said he will be out soon as he finishes the current customer.

Did you not ask him about your maximum sync rate attainable?
