Upgrading from Compact 1110i to HD PVR

Currently I have a DStv Compact 1110i decoder. I am thinking of getting a HD PVR but only for PVR functionality, not HD channels, XtraView and other nonsense.

My question is this, can I simply but the HD PVR from game and put my smart card in it and use it as a PVR?

In other words, is it a must that I must pay them extra simply to have the ability to use their PVR?

You have to use the smartcard that comes with the HDPVR, you can't use your current smartcard

You wont get the HD channels on Compact anyway
The R65 is for Xtraview & PVR functionality, if you use one or both you still pay R65
So you will need to pay R219 (i think it is) + R65

Just to confirm, I am on Select 2 which is R148 a month, can I bolt on the PVR functionality and then pay R203 a month?
Will this also be the same with Easyview ? (R20 + R65)

Yes despite paying R2000 you are actually paying for the rights to record said shows, unfortunately you have to pay DSTV money for the right to record what you want.

If you have an old pc lying around you could always go the HTPC route.

I already have a HDD recorder, but DStv is using dirty tactics to force us into buying their PVRs. One thing they do is when you set an Autotune for a program it will deliberately only autotune to the program 8 minutes after it started. This happens even when you just set a single instance auto tune (no conflicts). Needless to say your recorder (VCR/DVD/HDD) then misses the first 8 minutes of the program.

I honestly don't think you can bolt on PVR functionality to any other package besides premium :-(

It is available on Compact, not sure about Select but I don't see why not

I have had it on select with my SD Pvr when I bought the HD decoder I upgraded to Full so as for the SD Decoder yes you can use it with select/compact so it is probably the same for the HD decoder.
