Upgrading - hardware list

Don't buy anything now.. wait for the Intel Conroe & AMD AM-2 to fill the market and for a DirectX10 graphics now.

Buying a pc now is like shooting yourself in the foot.

Remember, the 2 most important components in your computer is your motherboard & PSU. A good motherboard can set you back R 2000 and a good PSU R 1000, thats more than the CPU & Memory.

Jeeva, I am not looking at buying a new PC. All I want to do is upgrade Graphics card, memory and maybe CPU for the odd chance I wanna play some games (like this coming Friday at a mate's)

At this point I am looking at about R1000 for the above, which in my opinion is cost justified for returns

Very simple then. Spend about R500 on a 6200 graphics and the other R500 on more RAM. That would be the best use of R1000

lol, thats exactly how I got to the R1000 :D
Decided on the 6200, with 512Mb additional RAM. Should be fine-ish for the once a year BF2 combat session :D

err BF2, you should think about BATTLEFIELD 2142 !!, dont take the 6200 that uses system memory.

Now you guys are managing to confuse me even more?!?! :D
Jeeva, what are you talking about?

eASY laNDY, (Caps lock @#$), To make some cards price-worthy they use less on card memory and use system memory like many a MBoard with on board graphics like your XPC. If you boot it will sometimes tell you the shared memory value! Other cards do not do that. The better card to go for would be a performance/cost effective card like the 6600GT. But as you already gave a budget, for that the 6200 is the best! The TDH models would be better though bit then it is more pricey! All a question of the budget. Like with me I first look at what I want and then worry about budget. My advise to you would be to forget the ram for now and rather use the full budget for a Graphics's card. I looked at Your manual and the the next for the best performance boost will be the fastest CPU 533 MHZ FSB you can get for the XPC then only if required I will up the ram to 1 GB or 2GB for faster XP response. Except for the CPU the ram and the Graphics could be reused in a upgrade setup again later!

pupa, so what you are saying is that the 6200 uses system memory (like my notebook) and not dedicated on-board memory?

PS: Ignoreer jou PM :D

EDIT: I don't want the card to use shared memory ... so maybe this one rather then:
Asus N6600/TD GeForce 6600 8xAGP 128-bit 256MB DDR w/TV + DVI?

It might stuff up your budget a bit, but that's what I would go for in your situation.

I think that setup would actually do better than getting an extra 512MB of RAM with a lower end G-card. It's better to get a better g-card and no extra RAM, I think......

Mhh, I didn't realise the 6200 uses system memory. does mess me around a bit, but it doesn't phase me too much. Like I said, the most cost effective solution that will work, and the 6200 will definitely not work for me, so the 6600 it will be!

Ok, update for you guys: I got an ASUS 6200 from BTGames in Centurion (I couldn't wait anymore to see if it is going to work).

So wish me luck, going to install it now!

Morning all ... Well, the 6200 is in, and running no problems (haven't tested on games yet, as my BF1942 disk is missing, and I need a fcuking DVD drive to load BF2 ...

System temps look normal (40 degrees), but like I said, no games played yet

Update: The GeForce6200 works like a charm
The Samsung Lightscribe works like a charm.

So yeah, I am happy!!
Thanks for all the input guys!!

P.S. you guys think I am going to look like an @ss rocking up for our mini lan with a sub-par "gaming rig" and a 32" LCD screen? :D

Hello people. It's an 6200 AGP card. The AGP cards never use system memory. Only the 6200TC PCI-E cards use it. As long as it does not say 6200TC it will be fine.
