Hi,

So I have an older mac Mini, has a 1.8ghz Core 2 Duo and 2GB of ddr2 ram.

Basically I want to know what I will have to do to get the latest iLife on it, I have sent apple numerous emails only to be ignored...I just need the newer garageband so I cannot justify 14 grand for a new Apple product.

I know the mini's are less expensive but why get a desktop these days? :)

Not sure about the iLife - but pretty sure if you pop up a question on the Macrumors forum, in the Mac Mini subforum - you'll get your answer very quickly (purely since I'd be pleasantly surprised if one of the regulars around here recently upgraded theirs, without bragging about the new purchase) :)

Plan on getting a Mini myself in the next year or two. Just missed a good deal on a 2011 version. Think they are awesome little machines! Let us know what happens!

According to wikipedia the latest iLife 2013 update pack requires Mavericks. Mavericks system requirements specify 2009 macmini & newer.
Apple support site indicates the same.

There's also mention of iMovie not working on older Intel GPUs lacking the required opengl support.

Which macmini do you have, 2,1 etc?

What ponder said. That Mini is barebones spec for Mtn Lion. If I am not mistaken, that is the 5 USB early 2009 release. What is its current OS? If all of this is correct, you should just be able to run ML or Mavericks and then get iLife. What have you tried so far?

I used to have a dual-boot with OSX snow Leopard and windows 7. I then tried to remove the partion and just have osx but I ended up almost ruining the entire pc, it took me a full day just to get mountain lion back on the thing and then I lost my snow leopard disc.

Argh, I'll get this right eventually. I just want a newer garageband, it doesn't have to be the latest and greatest one. I'm still sitting with Garageband 3!

They are awesome little machines, it boots up in like 12 seconds and it doesn't lag or give me any sign that it's getting long in the tooth. I don't want to give up on it lol. I have a core i7 desktop running a huge graphics card and I use that for any heavy stuff like gaming and all that. So i cannot see why I must spend at least 8 grand on a new machine.

If it does ML, it will do Mavericks. And I think when you upgrade to Mavericks, the store detects other stuff like Garageband and updates that too.

I didn't miss. :D

Basically intended getting the latest 4th Gen Intel NUC but they are super pricey. The Mac Mini sure was a sweet deal. :)

I retyped what I was going to reply to you, several times. :D

Enjoy that massive bargain. [Still kicking myself].

Hehe. Sorry bro. Went to my dad who was using an ancient P4 box with Windows Vista.
