Well, you should still be able to reach almost 4GHz with the non-K version of the i5 2400?
There are some serious issues with these 1st generation 1155 cpu's that are putting me off the more I read about them. Cutting out the possibility of overclocking on all but 2 high-priced models really goes against the budget-OC ethic they put in place with C2D and continued with i7 and i5, where you could take an e2160 and squeeze 4ghz out of it with a bit of effort. Also Quick Sync demolishes CUDA and Stream as a transcoder, but it won't work if you have a discrete GPU. 1075T still looks like good value to me.
Damn! If I can get it at that price I'll take it.
But I'm not keen on buying computer components from a website. I'll have to contact my local retailer.

The chip each and every review recommends is the 2500k. I'm not sure why Prophecy only have the 2400 - listed at over the forecast UK price for the 2500K as well! Prepare to get fleeced Afro style. The performance is still stellar and the OC is not bad at all. The K models are targeted at a different market segment but come at a premium.
I would not hesitate to buy a non K model right now as that is purely aimed at the OC crowd. Hell just look at the stock performance you get off a i5-2400 and it works out cheaper than the AMD solutions presented in this thread.
Sanity does not seem to prevail on internet forums.

I can buy directly from Rectron in Cape Town through a friend so I'm somewhat limited. Otherwise I would have to go to my local retailer and pay more.
I also have a limited budget. I'm willing to spend:
[*]± R1800 on a CPU
[*]± R R1200 on a motherboard
[*]Not over R2000 for graphics card.
It isn't the "best" chip. Like the i5 760, it's the best value for money. This is the chip that Prophecy should be touting.
Secondly tell him with a straight face that the i5-2400 is inferior to the AMD suggestions thus far.

If he had money to blow I would advise him otherwise but when working within the confines of his budget the options are limited and we have to pick the best within those limits.
Yeah. PcInt has reasonable prices in some components. I usually forget about them since they don't have too many products to select from.PCInt has the 1055 for 1800

I'm a bit thick so I (at 24:00 at night) am not following you argument's logical progression tht well (totally my fault). Please say again what would you buy if it was your money.
With the prices at prophecy for the mobo and cpu, Ive been recommending it to just about everyone I know whos been looking for a cheap upgrade. My word its awesome!.....thought some are being picky about the motherboard, its a wonderful upgrade!
