So its been ages since me and the SO have upgraded our PCs and in anticipation of D3 launching I have decided to look into possible upgrades. Currently my pc spec is roughly as follows: 4890, q9550 with old Asus p5k mobo, 750w PC power and cooling PSU, 1tb Sammy F1 drive and 6gb OCZ ram.

My wife's rig : Q8200, 4890, 1tb sammy F1 drive, 600w OCZ PSU(can't remember exactly) , Asus mobo 4gb OCZ ram.

Now I'm not looking to mess with everything too much but what would give us the best "boost"..? Of course GPU is the obvious choice but would it be best to spend the most of the $ on the GPU alone or try to work in a SSD in there somewhere...?

Recommended spec is a core 2 duo or better, with a GTX260 or HD4870 or better, however they dont mention the resolution its b eing played at. So my advice would be to wait until you actually have the game installed and then see if you need/want a GPU upgrade. Doubt you'll need a CPU upgrade at all just for D3.

A powerful graphics card is just the way to go! I have similar specs to your pc with an ATI 5850 OC. And a new game like syndicate plays 100% on 1920x1080 at full graphics (except for AA that is).

I guess it would be more of an routine upgrade. Ja both PCs fall within recommended spec just thought I would prepare in advance. My wife plays tons of sims3 though and her game seems to be quite laggy of late. As for res: she plays on a 27" samsung (1920x1080) and I play on my trusty old T260:)

Diablo 3 was designed to run on aging consoles. Most won't have a problem running it on even a budget gaming pc.
Except for the few exceptions we won't really see games flexing our computers until the next consoles get out.

No it was not  There is a big difference between having a PC and console version, and designing specifically for console
And most popular games are "flexing" current hardware, even if they have console counterparts...

While D3 is primarily being developed with PCs in mind, it's not being pushed as hard as it could because it is coming out on console.

Only because they are **** ports where the guys don't optimise at all for PC.

"Hey it runs on xbox so lets just use the same code and let the vastly superior PC hardware handle it."

See GTAIV PC for reference.
