So I've decided not to sell my ENORMOUS macbook as I will not make enough and it's still pretty powerful.

I will rather upgrade the RAM, at the moment the configuration is 2x2GB 1066mhz DDR3 SDRAM

What can I upgrade it to?

Two memory slots so 8GB (2x4GB matched memory modules) would be it.

That aside, glad to see you haven't jumped for the first Apple upgrade that came along. The next upgrade will be even better and the next, and the next, and the next... Pace yourself. More memory now and perhaps an SSD later... There's plenty of life in that ENORMOUS MBP and you might even get used to the size.

Is any make OK to use?

Also can I only use the 1066mhz ones?

Nothing wrong with the likes of Transcend, Kingston.

No, you can use 1333MHz ram but it will probably only be clocked at 1066MHz if that is all that your chipset supports. The higher freq. ram is usually cheaper due to it being newer I have found.

I am not quite sure where I read that it is not a good idea to run ram which gets throttled back - 1333 to 1066. Not quite sure what the article was about but maybe someone can explain.

There's nothing wrong with it. That speed is an indication of the maximum speed at which it's rated to run. It can be clocked at any frequency.

It's cheaper because it's not Apple branded, it's just generic RAM, but it works perfectly.

Dude, let me know what Ram you buy and if it works - as I am also planning a 8GB upgrade soon :)

Pretty much any DDR3 so-dimms work in the unibody macbook pros and any DDR2 so-dimms work in the pre-unibody macbook pros. Doesn't matter what brand the RAM is. I've upgraded countless machines.

I promise you it's fine. If there was even the remotest of issues I would not have done it with all the machine I upgraded ram on.

Got a link to that article?

Why are there such expensive RAM modules then?

Because there are idiots out there willing to pay for it?

If you are worried about quality (why?) and prefer a little Apple sticker on your ram I suggest you contact your local Apple dealer and pay the R1000/GB that they charge. Btw, they will sell you the exact same product made in a Chinese factory but it has the little apple sticker on.

LOL no just curious. so any make is fine and any speed is fine?

I've purchased Kingston, Transcend, Hynix in the past and have had no issues. Pretty sure they are all ok. Just retain your receipt.
