Just a quick question. I cuurently have DSL 512 and want to upgrade to the Closer 5 package (DSL 1024).
Is it true that they have to send someone out to my house again - and why?

Lol - I upgraded to 1024 and didn't see a person. It just happened and they phoned me about 3 days later to ask if im happy.

That's how I understand it too, but when I spoke to the "well informed" person at 10219 - they said someone must come out to my house - 14 working days.

Oh, these people at Telkom

I Upgraded last week, and it was done automatically, i called 10219 to ask when it will be done, and they said that i was already on 4096 !

With Telkom Closer 5 they have to give you a new router/phone (Its the router and phone packaged together, you have to have this with closer 5).

So if you have a Telkom router you have to give that back. Technically they dont need to come to your house as you could go to a Telkom Shop and get the router/phone package if they have stock.

The new router is the "Telkom MEGA 100WR" Go to telkomphones.co.za

If you already have a phone line and ADSL , lets say 512, as per the topic of this thread " Upgrading to 1024 - Closer 5" then all you have to do is call them and they will upgrade your line to 1024 ( 4096 if your area supports it) and its done from thier side, they dont nessesarily have to send someone or something.
Any normal ADSL router works just fine, you dont need to get the new router.

Ok. I ordered Closer 5 from scratch. They came out installed DSl (4mb) and gave me a router (Some White thing, probably Marconi). I check the Closer package and see we were supposed to get a free cordless phone with a little LCD screen.
I phone Telkom up to ask about the phone and they say I must take the router I got (The white thing) and swap it out for the phone/router package.

Since the phone is packaged with the router I couldnt just go to a Telkom shop and get the phone. Had to bring the router they originally gave me and give it back.

They DONT need to come to your house to upgrade to 4mb as Cozi and a few others have said. However I have no idea if you are on contract or if so how moving from one contract to another will affect the router situation(Like do you have to give back your current router and get the new package or can you keep it and get the new package). But at some point or another you will want that phone so you will have to go and get it or a Telkom guy will come drop it off.

If you get to keep your current router (If its not a Telkom one you will be able to keep it. Not sure if it is a Telkom router) and you you want the phone thats part of the "Closer 5" package, you will get that with a router and therefore have 2 routers.

wild_cat prob took a contract, not a very wise move. you dont need to take a contract on the closer packages.

they dont need to come to your house, all that needs to be done is they need to assign you a new port or something at the exchange, which a telkom techie will do, for me it was done within a day.

your router (any router) then needs to be restarted, and you will sync at hopefully 4096 (if exchange supports it)

Yep, that's what I thought, but the "well informed"person at Telkom still says they need to come out.

What I currently have is 512 (no contract) - I already have a router. I explained this to her but still she wants to send someone out. I've put it the upgrade anyway, and hope that somewhere along the lines they will notice that they dont need to come out to me house...

Thx for all the comment although it seems like evryone has a different view on how this will happen.

It was my dad that took the contract! I promise! :P

Ya I've been trying to get him to get ADSL for a while now so I'm just happy we got it. He is the one who has to deal with contract issues.

Peace

Ok, they said the upgarde was done this morning, but my pings are still exactly the same.
I've reset my modem/router and it still seem to be the same speed.
Any advise - am I missing something?

Thx

what does it say you are syncing at on your router?

Hell i didnt find much difference in pings... well, 18 to 19ms to IS servers...

Mind the stupid question, but where will I see this?
When I do a google.com ping I get an average of about 343ms.

When I log in to my router settings it does say Data Rate 4096/384

Any good ways of doing a spped test?

4096 is 4mbps.......try downloading something and youll get (hopefully ;) )great speeds :)

Do you get access to 4Mbps speed on Closer5 or does it throttle you to 1Mbps even if you have access to the faster option?.

Thx, I know.
Yeah, it seems to be ok now - depending on which speedtest I use :)

Iburst speed test: 3450 down
320 Up

Sentech: 2200 down
290 up

Gameco: 2414 down

International speedtests seems to be crappy though :(

Because they are single threaded. You find most times you will need to use a download manager / accelerator to get your max 4mbit speeds with international... ;)
