Hi Guys,

Im sure this topic has been discussed to arms length but i'm still curious as to why we cant have symmetrical services and why upload still is limited by ISPs and FNO's.

The way i see it is that their networks are all bought symmetrical and upload should make no difference to any of the capacity they procure.

So why limit the end user?

GPON is natively asymmetric, that being said the nature of most consumers is to consume. It's very rare that the upstream capacity on PON is ever an issue and can't accommodate symmetrical realistically.

some FNOs do have symmetrical lines

it's usually one of two things:

1. a technical limitation
2. a business decision

sometimes both
sounds more like a business decision imo i dont see any other limitation other than the GPON that @PBCool mentioned above, but that should very rarely be an issue
