Hi all,
Any ideas as to what is causing an erratic upload speed?
I am on a 20/20 fibre line through Vumatel with Afrihost as ISP.
Initially I picked up some issues on the standard issue DLink DIR-825 router with some intermittent packet loss. Tried all firmware updates, resetting etc. etc. but will little joy. I then used a new DLink DIR-815 router which was not much better. Changed all cables to the ONT/CPE box on the wall to router. No luck.
I get a stable 20mbps download but it is only the upload that seems to be the issue. The main symptom is on voice MS Team or Zoom calls that people complain that I fade out during the call.
I then bought a Tenda AC10 router and this solved the packet loss issues on an internal ping test to router. For about a week, things seemed better but recently I noted that the speed test to Vumtel ISP handover is showing erratic upload speeds.
I have connected to the ONT/CPE box directly and also to the router by LAN - and it appears that the download and upload is stable. (Hard to test when you on a conference call and the issues occurs)

This points to wifi issues.
I have unplugged all electronics close to the router and all devices in the house to eliminate any interference but I still have this issue.
Any ideas what else to look for? I've tried channel changes, 802.11 tweaks, anti-interference modes, multiple reboots... you name it.
Where my study is not ideal for me to run a LAN cable to the router - and I really think in todays day and age it should not be necessary.
I am the only person on the wifi and the load is minimal on the line. Browsing and one voice session at a time.
My last resort is to try buy a power over ethernet and see if I can get a "LAN" connection to where I need to work in the house.

Any thoughts would be appreciated to troubleshoot this.

Hi, actually to a large degree yes. It appears the majority of my issues was probably due to the laptop sound/device drivers that might have had an issue. This potentially cause the constant fade. I have also installed power over ethernet setup so that when I am on voice calls I have the stability I require. I have on the odd occasion lost the lan connection and reverted to WIFI and it has been ok. A firmware update seems to have corrupted the video driver with the Sophos safeguard encryption - so ended up getting a new laptop from work since they weren't too keen on trying to "fix". Down side is that the new T490s Lenovo's are pretty crap suprisingly - have had two microphone failures on two brand new notebooks in 2 weeks!
