UPS and Surge Protection

Hi Guys

Don't know ANYTHING on this subject.

Can I run a 500watt PSU through this UPS? http://www.apc.com/products/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=BR500CI-RS&total_watts=200

I'm loosing a lot of PSU lately, do I only need a surge protector to protect my PC's? I don't really need the whole battery effect.

I just don't want to blow more PSU's and MB's.

Where can I buy surgeprotectors on their own.

500VA isnt going to last long when the power is out with a 500w PSU and all your other items in the PC but as you said, you dont need the battery. However if there is a surge, it will just pop the little fuse in the UPS. You will just need to replace the fuse and all up and running again. Unlike when you dont have an UPS and it blows the mobo and psu.
 
If you want something that will protect your PSU:
1. Surge protector. You can get this at computer stores, Builders Warehouse, HiFi corp, etc etc.
2. Online UPS: It will be a small one, because they're expensive, but it filters your power for you. An offline/standby UPS only goes online AFTER a power event.

VA has NOTHING to do with capacity and everything to do with the load the unit can carry.
Other than that, that UPS is only 300W which is obviously less than the 500W your PSU can pull, so you'd probably hurt the UPS if you went under full load.

Froot's correct though. A surge protector would help but isn't guaranteed to keep you safe, for that you'll need an online UPS, which as stated, can be quite expensive.

If your power supplies are harmed by something on AC mains, then why do you think a UPS does anything?

Cleanest power from a UPS is when it connects your power supply directly to AC mains. 'Dirtiest' power comes when UPS switches to battery. Any reply that does not also include numbers means ignore it. This 120 volt UPS outputs 200 volt square waves with a spike of up to 270 volts between those square waves. Did you grasp what those numbers are? That is perfectly ideal power to every minimally sufficient power supply. Power that harmful to power strip protectors and small electric motors is made irrelevant by power supplies.

Why are your supplies failing when so much cleaner power is from AC mains? Or did you automatically believe popular lies about dirty AC mains. 'Dirtiest' power come from a UPS in battery backup mode. Show me 240 VAC mains that routinely generate 500 volt spikes.

Your problem is not AC power. Your failure is more likely traceable to a retailer. Computer assemblers typically have no electrical knowledge. So dumping inferior supplies into the market is profitable. Those supplies can even violate national standards and regulations. Because the assembler is responsible for meeting those regulations. Most computer assemblers do not even know they - not the supply manufacturer - are responsible for meeting those laws.

Your supply must be so robust that even a UPS will not harm it. 'Dirtiest' power a computer will see typically comes from the UPS.

Why do you think a UPS does anything? Do you automatically believe what others say without numbers? Or are you educated - know that answers only with numbers have credibility? The UPS does nothing for your power supply failures.

You must have numbers from a multimeter to know why supplies are failing - or even if supplies really are failing. Or you must have numbers so that those who actually know this stuff can reply. Did you know about the power controller that determines if a supply will work? First learn what is wrong. Fixing always comes much later.

Didn't take long for the troll to pitch up. Every one of your posts is a variation of the same bull****. What is your point? Do you want peoples equipment to fail? What are you peddling? Honestly, just **** off. UPSs and surge protectors DO protect equipment. Rather let the adults decide on what they want to invest in without your childish inaccuracies and diversions.
 
Hi Guys

One thing with surge protection dont buy that stuff from the stores, rather go to a reputable dealer who specializes in surge protection, because surge protection is paralled onto your cables, you will never know if its blown or even installed.

with reagards to UPS systems rule of thumb always go for a pure sinewave output UPS, this will ensure your power supplies on you PC's wont over heat, it oftern cost more to install a cheap UPS onto your PC, than paying a little more upfront.
