UPS battery lifespan

I was just wondering what the typical life span of a standard UPS for a desktop PC. The ones I have seem to last about a year or so. Is this a normal life span?

2 years I think. Depends on the brand & type of battery though.

In all our design contracts where UPS's are used, we specify that all batteries be serviced every year and replaced every 2 years. If you have a little cheap desktop one then anything beyond a year is fine.

Having said that, our 3kVA ups decided to explode today when the power tripped and it had to carry the 9 pc's we had - which it's been doing perfectly for the last ...wait for it...2 years.

UPS's need to have batteries purpose designed. Many cheap or homebuilt solutions use car batteries which won't last.
